The fire department of Newberry
cost the city about $6,500. I t was
organized on its present basis in
May, 1884. There are three conpa.
nies, viz: The Excelsior Steam Fire
Company, the Eagle Hook and Lad.
der Company. and the Young Ameri
can Truck Company. 'There are two
engines. one a new steam fire engine
and one a hand machine. The hook
and ladder company and the truck
company are colored organizations.

ending Aug. 31, 1886 were $61,796.
94. Mr. Mazyck, who is also express
agent, states that the receipts of the
Southern Express Company at New
berry will average $150 per month.

There was a good deal turned ont,
but there has been quite an improve.
ment since the July report. Thme
crop~ is late and not certainm yet.
Picking will not commence for two
weeks, and will not be general under
three. Upland corn is not as good
as expoctedi, and b)ottom corn is a
failure. Our people are cutting more
grass than usual. Th'le peaf crop is
very good. Th'Ie molasses crop has
been good.
