was not the sign of hope or spirit
beaming out from their beautiful
faces. They knew not, from day t
day, whether I would live to greet
them another day. They knew not
whether, if my life were prolonged.
they would be able to procure the
very necessities of life from day to
day.
They knew not at what hour the
very shelter that shieled them from
the s:orm and from tLe heat would
be removed from over their heads,
and they removed from under its
shelter. There were visions of un
certaintv, of the sheriff to lispossess,
ot the heartless landlord to distrain
for re:.t. o* the creditor to come and
take all. There was no future al:ao
of them. except a future of impene
traile gloom through which seemed
to come nothing but warnings of
deeper woe and agonies yet to come
O, Lord. how good thou wast to me:

bondage at my seeking.
At last there came a time whenI
seemed to have reached the limit.
Something strange impelled mec to
take my little childreu, as a loving
act. an act it seemed to me of repa
ration for negilects of weeks preced
ing, and go upon the traini to Carters
ville, whiera Brother Jones was preach
ing to immeuse audiences. andl fronm
whence the report had come that
there were many and many hundreds,
and even thousands, who were com
ing back into harmony with God
