There are many things to observe in preserving the health and growth of hogs. especially where a farmer has a large number of them. The common saying is "as dirty as a pig." And yet in some respects hogs are particular about cleanliness; and it is especially important that their food, drink, beds and quarters should be clean. Damp or poorly ventilated places of keeping are the cause of many diseases, and aggravate others. Hogs are the easiest and best way to make money if their health can be preserved, consequently it will justify any one to take great care and incur considerable expense to insure their health. Carbolic acid is the best agent to use about hog pens and to mix with their food. It is safe, easi. ly understood, and can be used or administered by any one without the least danger. It is cheap and farm ers should use it freely in purifying - the pens, beds, and any foul places where the hogs frequent. If hog cholera is in the neighborhood, and hogs have been exposed by having dead hogs hauled through the neigh borhood, or if cholera is at any place above them on a stream . of water, no matter how far, hogs should be given carbolic acid three times a day. Ten drops is enough fnr a hog weigh ing one hundred pounds, and the = dose graduated more or less, as the hog is heavier or lighter. It can be given in liquid or ground food, and the quantity is so light, that it will be freely taken. It is not claimed that it is a remedy for cholera or any other malignant disease, but it is good toward off or intercept any diseases. 1 And it is so healthy an agent that it can be profitably used at all times in a limited way, but when there is any I probability of contagion being about use "it lavishly, both as a disinfect- 1 ant and as an inward immunity from disease." A bottle of it should al ways be kept about horse stables, and a solution of carbolic acid sprinkled about the stalls, and espe ialy if the stables are damp or lack ing in ventilation. Its success in all such cases is indisputable. LIVE STOCK IN NOVEMBDER. There will soon be a daily out-go *of fodder, and the problem of winter feeding, and care of live stock, is to so govern this expenditure, that the best returns may be obtained. All the farm animals should be in good flesh and health upon the opening of winter. If these conditions are con tinued, the stock are well kept, and will not come out "spring poor" at the end of the winter. Manure is not to be overlooked in the winter * system of farm management. Farm ers, more than ever before, must feed for manture, and husbanid it when ob tained. An abundance of whole some food, plenty of pure water, warm, dry quarters, and sufficient fresh air, are tour of the leading es sent als in wintering farm stock. It does not follow from this, that the animals must be kept in the stable, or under the shed at all times. Fre quent exercise in the open -yard is profitable when the weather is suit able. Keep the work horses busy in the field preparing for the coming spring, and feed them well with a variety of food. A few chopped ap ples serve as atinI)ppetizer. Colts need to be pushed in their growth with rich food and good care. Cows taken up from grass, need a mix ture of hay, corn fodder, and meal -all they w~ill eat up clean, or else the flow of milk will greatly decrease. One-third of a cow's allowance is not too much for a calf. Sheep may be the last stock to go into wirter quar ters. Keep only thrifty sheep through until spring. Fattening pigs should now be growing rapidly. Grain is low and meat is high, therefore convert the former into the latter. There are many things that. will add to the comfort and convenience of caring for live stock in winter. Provide ample feeding room for all animals. Place the feed racks. etc , where most convenient.-Americarn Agriculturist for November. Labor is too dear in this country to profitably use liquid mfanuies. If the soil is kept well fertilized fre quent cultivation will supply crops with moisture more cheaply than it can be drawn on the land and distrib uted. It is difficult to get lien manure fine enough to drill without serious waste, and if spread from the wagons it is put on so imuevenly as to do as much harm as good; but by mixing it with the compost heap it can be distributed evenly and cheaply. Rotten chips or sawdust are good for lettuce and radishes. and if a top dressing is given where these a' e to be sown a decided improvmnent in the crop will follow.
