So small..aqjiiauity as this in adii
tion to pasture. often proulces
great results. it is much ci heaper
ani easitr to keep :cow in a good
thriving con(ition than to recover
from an exhausted one. Unint:r
rupted thrift, at all seasons, with all
domestic animals, should be the
motto; and this depends on con
stant care and oversight, with sound
judgment in selecting the Iroper
food and in giving it in certain
qnantities and at proper times, and
we might add, having in addition
for each animal constant access to
a lump of rock salt. Cows at blst
have but a portion of the attention
given theln that they should have.
AVERAGE YIELD OF A GOOD
COW.
A good cow should give an aver
age of twenty pounds of milk a day
for 240 days; 100 pounds of milk
should give eight pounds of cream;
1-pounds of cream should give
fotnt-five pounds of butter. and 100
pounds of milk should produce ten
pounds of chese. Ti~s would be
equal to 41.-0 pounds of cheese or 1 75
pourrds of boiter in th'e seasonl. It
is an extragxood cows that will yield
200) pounds of butter in a year. ilut
there are cows that will vield 3U00
or 400 pounds. One cow. in the
writer's diary has given 45 pounds
of butter from 31ay 10, 1582, to
September 10., 18%1 wichI is equial
to one pound ad six ounces daLily
for the whole time. Suich a cow is
an extraordinary one. as her vielud
from Mav 10. 142 to MIay 10, 1883,
was nearly .O pounds. This cow
is a fine Jerser but until recently
has been fet six eunr, s of meal (1ai
