DRY IIOUSES VS. DA)IP
HOUES.
The importance of selecting dry
locations for a residence is very
aptly illustrated in the following
extract from an addre-s by Profes- T
sor R. C. Kedzie, before the Michi
gan Tile Makers' convention:
Two brothers in Vermont, of
strong and vigorous stock, and giv- F
ing equal promise of a long and ac
tive life, married wives correspond
ing in promise of future activity.
They had chosen the healthiest of -
callings -farming. One of the
brothers built his house in an open
and sunny spot where the soil and
subsoil were dry; shade trees and
embowering plants had a hard time
of it, but the celar was dry enough
for a powder magazine. The house
in all its parts was free from every
trace or dampness and mold; there
was a crisp and elastic feel in the
air of the dwelling; the farmer and
all his family had that vigorous
elaaticity that reminds one of the
spring and strength of steel; health
and sprightly vigor were the rule,
and sickness the rare exception.
The farmer and his wife, though
past threescore, have yet the look
and vigor of middle life.
The other brother built his house
in a beautiful shady nook, where
the trees seemed to stretch their
protecting arms in benediction over
the modest home. Springs fed by
the neighboring hills burst forth
near his house, and others by his to
barns; his yard was always green,
even in driest time, for the life cu
blood of the hills seemed to burst 1n
out all about him in springs and dr
rivulets. But the ground was al- to
ways wet, the cellar never dry, the en
walls of the room of.en had a clam
my feeling, the clothes mildewed in e
the closets, and the bread moilded
in the pantry. For a time, their,1t
vigor enabled them to bear up
against these depressing influences; tlI
children were born of apparent vig
or and 'promise, but these, one by s
one, passed away under the touch
of diphtheria, croup and pneumonia; Wi
the mother went into a decline, and w
died of consumption before her fif
tieth birthday, and the father still s
lives, but is tortured and crippled P
by rheumatism.

A CII EAP FILTERt.
Very many families desire some r
inexpensive device for filtering rain at
and other waters to be used for
cooking and table use. A cheap r
and very eflicient filter may be
made by using a spirit or wine cask,
placing it on end, with the head re
moved, and having a faucet at the c
bottom to draw off the clear water. c
To fit it for a filter, take the remov- C
ed top) head of the cast, arnd with a G
small bit bore holes all over it. then
place four clean bricks or blocks of
'wood on the bottom, and on these
rest the perforatted top. Now fill at
upon it about four inches of char- g
coal chopped into small bits the
size of' peas, and over this place a
layer of clean sand, six inches deep. f
Impure water poured into the cask
on top of the sand, will become P
clear and sparkling after a little
while, or as soon as all fine parti
cles are worked out of the charcoal
and sand. This filter will not need
renewing oftener than once in two
or three months.
Bad habits are small at the be.
ginning, but they grcw to enor
monis size. It is as difflcult to des
troy them when fully grown, as it
is easy to kill them when "in the
egg.'' A little giving way to a bad
temper may end in murder. Little
tits of idleness may lead to (disso
lute habits. How big these little
sins may grow we dare not even
think. The best way then is to
take hold of them, put a check on
them while they are young, ask
God t. give us His grace to over
come them, before they take posses
sion of us, and destroy us. The
longer we put off trying to check
these evils in our hearts, the ha'rder
shall we find it to be. So let us go
to work at once, and try to over- r
come them while they are small, ui
not wait until they are fully grown, n
when we shall more than likely be b
overcome by them.
TEA CAKE.-One cup of sugar
one tablespoonful of butter; three
eggs; beat well together; then adid C
a cup of sweet milk (you may use
part water,) arnd a quart of sifted 3'
flour, into which you have mixed a n
spoonful of cream of tartar, and
one-half teaspoonful of soda; bake
in a quick oven. It is improved by
sprinkling sugar over the top (lIe
lore baking.) This will make two
cakes, which are the best when eat.
en warm. -
CoRn OYsTERs -Six ears of
sweet corn (those which are not too
old;) with a sbarp knife split each
row of ccrn in the center of the
kernal length wise; scrape out theT
pulp; add one egg, well-beaten, a
little salt, one tablespoonful of I
sweet milk; flour enough to make a e
pretty stiff batter; drop in hot lard,
