It was this wish that the hosts tried to carry out for the general. While at the Hermitage, former home of Andrew Jackson, this after noon, General Pershing was present ed with a hickory walking cane made from a tree planted by Former Presi (nt Jackson. The general returned the gift to the ladies' Hermitage as sociation' by planting a hickory tree near the tomb of "Old Hickory." The general seemed to find every thing to his liking. Among those whom he greeted today were a ne gro vocational student tt the Ten nessee A. & I. Normal school, who lust his sight while serving in France, and another studeht -whom "Black Jack" had cited for bravery. Commends Legion Besides his emphatic denial of Sen. ator aWtson's charges that American soldiers in France were hanged with out courtmartial or trial, a fervent commendation of the American Le gion was issued by the genernl. "The legion," he said "hant gain ed a reputation abroad for its patri otisn and at home for its patriotism, conservatism and superior judgemont in dealing with problems-political, economic and social-now confronting the United States government." He paid a high tribute also to the Thirtieth Division, recounting its work in helping penetrate the Hindenburg line. While reveiewing the parade in the afternoon, General Pershing acted his part of "buddie and not commander." Usually he was laughing, applauding, cheering. The jovial attitude was abandoned only when disabled veter ans, a gold star mother, and a Red Cross float passed. - Entertained at Banquet Tonight General Pershing was en tertained at a banquet given by the Nashville chamber of commerce. He left soon thereafter for Washington. The program for tomorrow includes election of officers, selection of a re union meeting place for next year, choice of delegates to the American Legion convention in New Orleans in 1,22 and dranling of resolutions by the Old Hickory association. Keen rivalry is being shown in the p)ost-election fight for the reunion next year, Knoxville, Tenn., Greenville, S. C., and Charleston, S.
