X0TICE OF ELECTION
State of South Carolina,
County of Laurens.
Notice of Special Election on the
Questoion of Is1uing Vouiponi Bonds of
the City of Laurens in tie Sum of
$20,000 for Sewerage Extension and
Improvement of the Sewerage System.
Whereas, a written petition of a ina
Jority of the freeholders of the City
of Laurens, as appears from the tax
books of said City, has been illed with
the City Council of the City of Lau
rens, asking that an election be held
in saidl City of Laurens. at ,which shall
be submitted to the qualified electors
of said City the question of issuing
coupon bondls of the City of Laur'ens
in the sum of $20.000, payable within
forty years from the (late of issue,
and hearing a rate of interest not er
ceiding six (6) iper cent per annum.
for the purpose of sewerage extension
and improvement of the sewerage sys
tein in said City: and,
Wheras, the C"ity Council of the
City of Laurens has duly considered
said petition, canvassed the same, and
found it to be in proper form, and
sitied by the required number of free
holders as prescribed by the Consti
tution and Statute Laws of the State
of South Carolina. made and provided
in such cases, and upon consideration
thereof adopted an Ordinance and
Resolution dated 1-Ith day of July,
1921 that the prayer of the petition be
granted, and that the questikm of said
honds shall be submit.te(l to the qualil
fled, duly registered electors of said,
City of it1'urens, at a Special Election
to be held in and for the said City of
Laurens on the 23rd day of August,
1921.

requesting that a bill to prescribe
penalties for persons "disguising
themselves and violating the laws of
the state by inflicting putsishment it-p
on persons against whom no legal
complaint had been filed," be submit
ted to -the Texas logislature was pre
sentedi to Goverinor Netf today by Rep
resentative iPutnml. 'Before the sig
natures of forty-nine state represen
tatives. The bill. Mr. Putnam said,
was aimed at the Ku Klux Klan.
Mr. Putman also showed the gov
ernor what was purportedl to be an
appll icat ion blaik for iemnbership in
the "invisible l')mpire, Knights of the
Ku Klux Klan." Beyond remarking
that the reltuiireients of the al)plica
tion "were more stringent" than lie
had thought, the governor was non
committal, according to llepresenta
tive Putman. The ap'lioation, Mir.
Putman said, reciIred prospective
miembers to remit ten dollars and to
guarantee on honor -to conform to the
organization's constitution and by
laws. "If I -prove untrue as a Klans
man I will willinigly accept whatever

declared.
