The first time Orant came in sight
of the etnmy In the Civil war hie frank

Grant got to Appomattoxc; he kept
right on. Starting without a friend
at his back, and .with only a long, uin
broken trail of disappointments be
hind him, he never asked for promo
tion, an assignment or adfavor, yet this
unambitIous man rose to be general
in chief.
~No conqueror ever was higher setuled
than Grant at Appomnattox. Sad
and dlepressedi, as he tells ust, at

neighbor in trouble.

of the admiinistration as a "gift en1
terprise."
The many seamrdls of the adminis
tration were mlostly traceable to the
betrayal of Grant's childlike conti
[lennce In unworthy friends. "Black
