GOSNELL ON STAND
IN OWN DEFENSE
Says le Shot to Save Own Life. More
X-Ray Pictures.
Greenville, May 14.-restimony of
Jake Gosnell in his own defense and
the presentation by the state of an
array of testimony by X-ray experts
on the course of the bullets In Rec
tor's body were the two outstanding
features today of the trial of Jake
Gosnell, charged with murder.
'he theory of the prosecution is that
the bullet which entdred Rector's
body a few inches to the rear of the
Iauxiliary line was the first fired, the
conclusion being that Rector was, in
effect, shot in the back. The defen!e's
theory is that the first bullet was that
fired at the i.ad, which ranged froimi
the fi ont, the argu inent bieing that
Gosnell shot In self-defense.
In cr.('s examination three X -raty
experts and a surgeon testified that
the bullet which struck Sheriff ltee
tror's right jaw below the ear, never
entered the cranial cavity and there
fore did not touch the brain. The de
fensc flung back in a counter offen
sive, adducing testimony by the state's
experts that the bullet fired into the
jaw ranged downward and backward
lodging in the soft part of the nick
posterior.
The X-ray experts were called in an
effort to contradict the testimony of
Dr. W. Frank Ashmore, X-ray exeprt,
who had previously testified as a wit
ness for the defense that the X-ray
plates he made showed that the bull t
which penetrated Hector's jaw' had
pierced the skull and brain. In IDr.
Ashliioe's opinion, this was the firlst
'hiot fired ant was'a injury ealcillat
ed to cause ilstant death.
