It goes without saying that Green wood is delighted that the collegians tave decided to hold their contest mere this year, and the fact that they ,ome again without special pleas makes it all the more gratifying that this city has been selected. In the future only the number and the sub jects will be made public, until after the speaking has been completed. Washington, Jan. f.-Indications of a widespread spirit of unrest and dis satisfaction among the farmers of the country, so threatening as likely to disturb the existing economic struc ture, is considered by government offi cials to be revealed in more than 40, 000 replies to a questionnaire recent ly sent out 'by the postofilce depart ment. The replies as thus far digest ed were summarized in a report pre pared by George L. Wood, superin tendent of the postofilce department's division of rural mail, and read to the senate postoffice committee today by James L. Blakeslee, fourth assistant postmaster general. The views of the 40,000 or more farmers were obtained by the broad casting of 200,000 coplies of a question naire throughout the agricultural states asking for suggestions whereby the postofilce department might aid in cutting down the cost of living. Answers to the questionnaires have been coming in since the middle of De cember at the rate of 1,000 a day, and as summarized by officials show the major complaints of the farmers in numerical order to be: Inability to ob tain labor to work the farms, hired help and the farmers' children having been lured to the city by high wages ald easier living, high profits taken by middlemen for the mere handling of food products and tack of proper agen cies of contact between the farmer and the tultimate consumer. Many of the replies. said one of those who bad looked then over, probably as many as 50 per cent., indicate that the writers contemplate either leaving their farms or curtailing their acreage, because of the growing feeling against nonpro ducing city dwellers. Commenting tonight on the replies, Assistant Postmaster General Blakes lee said: "Such a condition at a time when the predominant cry is for pro duction, and still more production, can not but constitute a grave menace." Before the senate committee, be characterized the situation as "dis quieting and portentious of disastrous consequences." This opinion was ex pressed by Mr. Blakeslee after a mem ber of the senate committee had re marked that the replies seemed to have come "mostly from a buineh of bolshevists."4 Iacerpts from a numhtlSber of letters taken at random from the more than -10.000 already on file at the postot1ce department showed the trend of thought among at least a considerable prolortion of the farmers of New Eng land, the Middle Western states and the agricultural section. "The time is very near," wrote a farmer at East Catham, N. t. "when we farmers will have to curtail production and raise only what we need for our use and let the other fellows look out for themselves. Labor union are more to blame for the high prices than any one else. People are trying to get pay for what they don't ('arn." Wrmit inrg from Yalmiyras, .lo., antother0) farmer' said: "I almost fear a famine, farm hell) everywhere is flockung to the city, Inured by short hours, high wages and the promise of a good time. Sone one. I fear, Is going to stiffer if this conldiltion is not remedied short ;r)('laring that tihe whole onus of the high cost of living rests 'with the middle man, another Missouri pro ducer advocated the establishment of mulnicip~al markets to be served by parcel post dIrect. "I sell buttter 'to the dealer for 415 cents a pound," his letter saidl, "and the same butter sells to the consumer for 80 cents a ;pound. In the distribution we lose nearly half and we lose money on the butter at the first price. Such condlitions are causing the farmers to leave the farm by the thousands. WVe have reached a crisis. You may ask what .we would (10 with the middlemen. I will suggest that it be arranged for them to go to the far'm and help plroduce things. I understand that they might not relish working 14 hours a (lay, but. if we get by3 the neat' fuature there will have IC) be some useful work done by every one." Declaring thlat "great evils confront us today," says a letter, "redluce the cost of my foodstuffs to the constmer, you must first furnish me with first class labor at reasonable wages and, second, you must eliminate thousands of midldlemen who are robbing tihe people awholesale."
