Clemson College, Dec. 22.-We are continually asked to forecast weevil damage for this state In 1920. This cannot be done by any one with any great degree of dependence owing to the fact that the weevil damage is directly dependable on winter mini mum temperatures or summer rain fall or both, says Prof. A. F. Conradi, State Entomologist. Furthermore in invading South Carolina the pest ap pears under climatic rtonditions which present nerv features and it will be necessary to see the pest in action for at last one year in this state for us to be sure of our bearings. It is a general rule in the history of weevil damage that little injury occurs during the -first year after the weevil's appearance the previous fall. The first year after Its appearance is called the first year of its establish ment. Serious damage may be expect ed under favorable conditions espec ially on low grade lands during its second year of establishment, and if the pest receives no backset it may be expected to develop full strength the third year of its establishment. The boll secvil enters its third year of establishment in 13eaufort as far north as a few miles above liardeeville in 1920. It enters its second year of establishment in the Counties of Hampton, Jasper. Colleton, Dorchester, Orangeburg, llanrberg, Aiken, Barn well and Allendale in 1920. In the other counties of this state the weevil made its first appearance during the past summer and fall. If we should have low temperatures this winter, and if the growing sea son of 1920 is dry, then no very seri ous damage is erpecttd in any of the counties. !f, on the other hand, we should have a wet season, serious damage m-ny be expected in all of the counties above enumerated and occuring approximately below a line drawn from a point on the Savannah Itiver, a few miles below Augusta to .\lt. Pleasant on the coast. If the winter is mild followed by a wet season in 1920, severe damage may be expweted also in low lands of Berkeley, Will lamiuurg. 'Cenorgetown and .1lorry Counties. Bombs and Revolvers Used by Attackers. -Dublin, Dec. 19.-A determined but unsuccessful attempt was made today to assassinate Viscount French, lord lieutenant of Ireland. The attack evidently had been most carefully organized as a spot in a narrow iwinding Toad with high walls and hedges, affordidng the assassins good hiding places. One of the at tacking party was killed and a detec tive sitting with the chauffeur In the viceregal -ar, was slightly wounded in the hand. Som distance away, a po licenan, patrolling his'beat, was shot In the ankle. Both bomb-A and revolvers were used by the assailants the number of whom is variously estimated at from G to 15. The smaitler number, however, Is con sidered more probable. The viceregal pary fired on the assassins as they fled across the'fields, but all escaped (except one man killed, who was shot through the head.
