which seen to be current relative to
the proposel niemorial building and
to set forth tihe obJecta for which the
campaign for $400,000 is being pros
ectted, the South Carolina A31einorial
Commission de(etul1s it expedient to
make the following statement:
Tle General Assembly of 1919 pass
ed a Joint Rosolution approved March
7, 1919, provicling for the creat.lon of
it comiission, conmposed of Gov. IR. A.
Cooper as chairman and ex-Govern.r
Richard 1. Manning as Vice Chairman,
and fourteen other Imienbers, two from
each of the sevetn conigressional dis
tricts of the State. This cotumisslon
was empowered to erect a suitable
memorial building of "architectural
beauty aild appitropiiateness at the cap
ital of the State, 11pon grountds now
owned by the "State and held by he

5. The structure will contain a
large auditorium, as outlined in the
foregoing, andi a halil of records for
the preservation of documents and
historical data appertaining to the
persons and organlizat ions from South
Carolina who participated in the
World War.
6. Unless South Carolina has some
kind of repository, the imperishable
history of this State in the struggle
of Democracy against Autocracy will
he imperfectly preservcd, and, in af
ter years, the record will be incom
plete like that of the War iletween
tie States.
