Cooper and Ex-Gov. to Contribute to M War I To the People of South Carolina: The General Assembly at its last session passed a joint resolution pro viding for the erection of a building as a memorial to those who died in the service of this country during the World :War, and to all others who -ser-ved, whether as soldiers, sailors, .marines, nurses or members of kin .dred organizations devoted to the cause for which the war was fought. Under the resolution the sum of $100, .000 is made available from the State treasury whenever, in the opinion of the Memorial Commission, which also was (reated -by the resolution, a suffi cient sum shall have been raised by ; ar subscription. This commis sion, of which the Governor is chair my, has deelded that $400,000 is the pIr -er amount to be given by the peoplc of the State in direct donations. The building, 1which will be erected on lands now held by the Itustees of the University of South Carolina, will have an alcove for each county, and in these alcoves will be preserved in orl broize or ottlerl imperish able torm tle ecords of the sons and daugher'is of tie State who gave all, or otered all. "Men of this State fought splendidly in the Thirtieth, the irghty-fIrst, the Rainbow and other divisions, in the navy and in the marine organizations. These mon dedicated their lives to the great cause of universal justice. It is due them that the memorial be crect eds it is necessary for the rest of us that w erect it, else we shall suffer be caure of duty and appreciation ne gle'.ed, of inspiration lost. Those who suffered the untold miseries of muddy fields and battle Perils, those who traveled over the treacherous seas will ever be remembered gratefully by us all. This memorial is -but. one tok en of this reniembrance. The work and sacriflees of our wo men have made a brilliant page in our history. Without their unilled assist alee, their sympathy, prayers anid courage, ite mnortle of ou r ighti ng miei would have fall en, and battles woni would have been battles lost.
