Jones, June 21.-We are indebted to
Dr. W; E. McCord and .1r. Joha Straw
born, for recent kind favors.

Mr. Leonard Taylor, of Atlanta, was
at home last week on furlough.
Our neighbor, Mr. -3. A. 11111, is In
splendid health and "an do as much
work on the farm as any of the boys.
We tenderly sympathize with our
good friend, Mr. 3. I. AcNinch in the
recent .loss of his mother.
Mr. Luther Vanhoy, of Ware Shoals,
'who recently 'rdturned from France,
was drowned in Saluda River on the
14th Inst. All our people tenderly sym
pathize with tho bereaved family.
Mr. W. T. Jones, Jr., principal of the
Buffalo school, is at home for the
summer.
.Misses Isabel Beacham and Vivian
'Martin have returned from Lander col
lege.
Messrs. S. I. and Preston Williams,
of Laurens, were the guests of their
uncle, Dr. W. T. Jones, Sunday.
Our Venerable friend, 'Mr. John
Hamilton, of Ekom section, recently
paid us an appreciative visit. Though
an octagenarian he is still in the en
Joyment of good health and we hope
he may be spared many years to en
Joy the evening of a well spent life.
We extend congratulations to the
fair sex upon the passage by Congress
of the female suffrage hill Of course
the women are entitled to all of the
rights and privileges excrcised by men
and instead of Indulging in pessimistic
views of the progressive step as some
(1o, we should all heartily rejoice with
th(ni. The fair sex have always been
actively identified with every move
ment for the promotion of the moral,
edluvatlional anl social welfare of our
CQ'anty and of course they will con
tinue to do so.
We recently met the following

Mr. J. M. Rlidgeway, one of our most
successful farmers has only purchased
two sacks of corn in 25 years, and not
more than :00 lbs of ineat in that tine.

Ora, June 23.-Miss Elizabeth Hagan
who taught at Iva, the past session,
is at home for the summer.
Mrs. 0iuphemia Bryson left Wednes
day to attend the summer school at
Winthrop college.
Mr. Mel Fleming and two grandchil
dren, of Lanford, spent a day the past
week at Mr. 1'. C. Martin's.
Miss Margaret Byrd is at home for
the summer, her school near Willing
ton, having closed last week.
Mr. Nathan Wallace is at home from
Clemson college.
The Ladies' 'Missionary society, of
the A. R. P. church, met at the home
of irs. W. J. Fleming Tuesday after
noon, June 11th.
It will be of interest to the many
friends of Miss Lillian Fickling, who
taught in the Ora school two years
ago, to hear of her marriage last week
to Mr. John Rhodes, of 'Durham, N. C.
Miss Linda Hunter, of Spartanburg,
is with 'home folks.
Mr. George Blakely spent the week
end with friends in the mountains of
Northm'Carolina.

New Orleans, June 22.-A favorable
view of political events and continued
unsatisfactory weather conditions on
the belt put the price of cotton last
week to new high levels for the pres
ent bull movement. Highest prices
carried July to 3:1.10 and at this level
the market was 152 to 192 points high
er than the close of the mreceding
week and 235 to 272 points up from the
low levels madei at the middle of the
week. Last prices showed net gains of
101 to 130 points.
Contributing to the strength of the
market were the large exports and the
very favorable accounts from the dry
goods markrts of both this country
and England. which mention a large
turnover at high prices. Exports this
week were 157,S41 bales against 90,
337 this week last year, bringing the
total for the season thus far up -to
4,.10,20S hales against 3.884.583 dur
ing the same period last season.

Negro Six Times Convicted of Murder
is Again Given New Trial.
Columbia, June 23.--Willie Bethune,
the negro whose case has been in the
courts of South Carolina, for the past
ten years received a new lease on life
late this afternoon when the state su
preme court, in an opinion by Chief
Justice Eugene B. Gary remanded the
negro back to the circuit court of
Marlboro county to stand his seventhl
trial for life. He already has been
convicted of the murder of G. B. Mims,
a white man of Marlboro county, six
times ind has received a half dozen
death entences. In each instance
there was an appeal to the supreme
court, which reversed the judgment of
the lower court In every case.
Sunday morning, February 21, 1904,
the horse and buggy of G. B. Mins
became lost on the public highway of
Marlboro comty and. were caught by
Willie Bethune, who Immediately went
"Joy riding" with two of his women
friendisj (The 'buggy contained a
valise in which among other things
was a revolver. This Bethune pocket
ed. In the afternoon Mr. Mins, accom
panied by a friend, A. J. McFadden,
in another buggy, went in search of
the Mims' conveyance. When located
it was still being driven by Bethune,
with his two female companions. Mr.
Miis commanded the two women to
alight and .ot in the buggy -with
Bethune, presumably to arrest him.
Bethune then shot him in the head.
There is some dispute in the'testimony
as to whether Mr. Minms likewise fired
at the negro. Bethune wab irsL tried
for his life at Manning in June, 1919,
was convicted and sentenced to be
hanged on June .30, 1909.
