PERSHING PRAISES 81ST. DIVISION eGenera4 Persiing Writes Ven. nilley. On Nov. I IDivNion Ivas on the Hindenburg Line. The Eighty-First Division which landed in France August 16, 1918, saw three hard days of ,flghting, and when the armistice was signed on November 11 was crossing the Hina denburg lino near Etain. Of the "Wild Cat" Division General Pershi,ng said recently in a letter to Major Gen. Malley, the division commander: "With such a record the division may return home proud of its services in France, as a, part of the American Expeditionary forces." A copy of General Pershing's letter and a history of the division's work in France has been recently received in Columbia. It shows what a splendid part of the A. I. F. the Wild Ck'ats were. General Pershing's letter to General Bailey follows: "ly Dear General Bailey: "It gives me great satisfaction to extend to you, 'and the officers and men of the 81st Diivision, my compli ments upon their appearance at the review and inspection on April 10th, at Chatillon-sur-Seine. The transpor tation and Artillery of the Division were in good shape, and the gen eral bearing of the men was up to a high standard, and worthy of a Divi sion which, though in Friince for a comparatively hort time, has made a splendid rec.ord. "Arriving !n this country towards the middle of August, your period of training in the area near Tonnerre was ipterrupted by the necessity of sendii~g the ll-ivision into the line to relieve for the active battle, veteran organizations. The 81st was in the St. Die sector from the 18th of Sep lember to the 19th of October, when it iwas withdrawn and prepared for its participation in the Meuse-Ar gonne offensive. "It entered the line in this opera tion on the night of November 0th, relieving the 35th Division as the right flank division of the First Army, and attacking on the morning of No vember 9th against 'heavy artillery and machine gun fire. The attack was continued November 10th and 11th, and was resolutely pushed against strong enemy resistance, the advance covering 5 1-2 kilometres. "The bearing 6f fe Division in this, its first experienco in battle, showed the mettle of officers and men, and gave promise of what it would become as a veteran. * With such a record, the Division may re turn home proud of its service in France as a part of the' American 1Mx peditionary Forces. "Sincerely Tours, .(Signed) "John J. Pershing." The oflicial history of the Wild Cat Division follows: The Division arrived in France, via E'ngland on August 16, 1918, and pro eeeded to the training area at Ton nerre (Yonne), except the 15,th \rtillery Brigade and the 306th Am muntion Train which were sent to Camp Valdahon (Doubs). After a month's training, the Divi sion, less the Artillery Brigade and Amm unition Train, proceeded to the St. i)ie sector (Vosges) arriving on September 19th, and occupied the same until the 19th of October. It formed a part of the 33rd Corps (iPrench). luring this month of service in the sector, the divsion was engaged in and repulsed raids. One of the lat ter, preceded by a long and severe artillery preparation by the Germans, was followed by an attack of about one .hundred shock troops who were repulsed with some ten killed, one captured and probably several nwound edl. Shot guns and automatic rifles were successfully used by our troops, one of our men killing three Ger mans 'with an automatic. During the occupancy of this .sector, the casual ties were: Killed: 2 officers, 19 men; wounded, 14 men. The ,Division left the 'St. Die sector on October 19th and proceeded to the vicinity of Ranibervillers( Vos ges) to await transportation to join the First Army for the Meuse-Ar gonne offensive.
