WHEN MAKING OUT A CHECK Take Time Enough to Write Legibly and Be Sure Amount is Indicated Clearly in Writing. Do you know how to write a check so that it (aninot he successfully tat pered with? E'xperts declare that carelessness In that small matter is responsible for the loss of millions of dollars annually, the loss falling some timies on the Individual and sometimes on the bank. There are mechanical devices to pr"event the raising of cheeks, but their use is not general, partly becautse of the expense, but maore particularly, probably, beenuse it adds one tmiore to the multitude of things to be done. For those whoII) are daily taking chances Willi iat G. Pengelly, hand. writing 'iteprt In a recent paper, of fers somle valtable advice in the draw lIngtif o heeks. Ills first suggestion is to take enouigh time for the process to he sure of tloilig a goodl joh. In filling in tilie slmce for the 1iamount in nu mueorals, write in legible figures, begin Iing close to the printed dollar iark; don't leave space for the Insertion of another figure. Then write the aiount In words, preferably beginning with a capiltal, at the left-hand ('1n' of the line; don't write it so that the amount stands in the middle of the line; hay. ing written the amttount properly, draw a heavy line from the last letter to the word "Dollars" at the right. As he says, "block the words inI" so that additions cannot be easily made either at the heginning or at the end. When the wor(s are written clearly and with an Initial of unmistakable identity, the check-raiser has little opportunity for his work. Another safeguard Mr. Pengelly sug gests is tie writing of the imtotint of the check, either in figures or words, in red ink, above or within the signature at the bottorn. In his experience he has found this to be a successful safe guard against fraitd. But the all-it portant things are legibility of hand writing atnd proper location of the written anounts.
