Many a man has in
his own character,

though his credit is limited by the

his greatest asset. To increase
this asset advertise it. Your good

the greatest asset of tremendous

BEST VARITIES OF COTTOD
FOR BOLL WEEVIL
CONDITIONS.
ClelusonI College.-The boll weevi
has made its appearance in tei
counties of South Carolina. In sevora;
of these counties the weevil is nu
nerous enough to damage the cottor
crop to . considerable extent in 1919
Consequently, some changes in thi
method of producing cotton must be
made to combat this post.
Among these changes will be thf
planting of better seed of earlie
fruiting varieties than are now gen
orally used. A variety must be used
that will begin to fruit early and sec
a good crop of bolls by the first o!
August, for after this time the weovili
are usually abundant enough to de
stroy all squares that appear. V1
should be a good yielder with a higt
percentage of lint. A medium siz(
plant is desirable. It should have but
3 or 4 vegetative branches, but fruit
ing branches should be numerous
both sets of branches coming out neat
the ground.
The cost of growing an acre of cot
ton from the best seed is nogreatet
than the cost of growing the samt
acre from inferior seed, but the differ
once int yield will often be from 30(
to 500 po)ris of seed cotton per ncrs
in favor of the good seed. At the pres
ent piCe of cotton this would be at
least $30.00 per acre, not counting tht
aced. The above figures are conserva
tivo, for in variety tests consistini
only of varieties considered standard
for the State. reisults have been obtain
ed showing a greater difference that
above between the highest and lowest
yielding varieties, though in many
cases the yiehl (if the lowest yielding
variety in those tostt would be greatej
than from "gini mixed" seed of inferioi
varieties cotmmonly used by many
growers. Consequently, those whc
use low grade sed in the weevil in
festad area will suffer a double loss
whie tloso who use the vest varieties
adapted to their sections will lose ony
to the extent of damage (1ue to the
weevils. That many farmers are ho
ginning to realize this fact is indicat
ed by the many inquirios for bette
varieties and sources of seed.
Them is no such thing as a "boL
weevil proof" cotton. Select a variety
that has been tried and has proved it
self ada-pt cs to the section in which it
Is to be grown. Then purchase seed
from a good reliable breeder as neat
home as possible; for results shom
that seed ordered from a distant state
where conditions are entirely different
do not produce as well as native growr
seed.
Early fruiting and late fruiting va
rivoies should not be planted in th
same Comntill ity, as the weevils wil
have had timte to multilply in tile fritii

Of the short st aple varieties that
canI be commet~t(Ine for Sout h Caroling
contlitiotns, Cleveland Dig lBoll, Cook
Dixie Triumph, and Dixie are thle prin
cipal ones. The first twvo are wel
adapted for all sections of the State
except where the land is wilt-infected
Cleveland is now more genera13
grown in the State than any other va
riet/. Several thousand bushels growr
andl bred in the State are sold every
yeax in theo weevil district furthel
Sourth and it is giving good results
Seed of tis variety can be0 obtained
from reliable breeders 'n tile State
