Spartanburg, tDec. 8.-Fire last night, which originated in tile ;base ment of The 1erald -and The Journal building about 7:15 o'clock, complete ly destroyed the plants of these two newspapers, entailing a loss of abou $50,000. The damitAge to the building, ,which is owned by Giles L. Wilson, of Jacksonville, Fla., is estimated ut $25, 000. The origin of the fire is not known. The first intimation of the fire came mihen C. 0. Hearon, editor of The Ier ald, who was in his office on the first floor in the real of the building, heard a cry of (listress, the alarm being sounded by a young son of A. F. Per kins, em11ployed iII the composing roo), Who was asleep in tile press room in the baselent. Hearing th screams of the boy, MIr. Ilearon left his offiev to investigate and found tile building to be on fire. Smoke was pouring out or the basement in great voliumte, comipletely filling the rear of tle' building. lighting his way through hlle clouds or sIloke, .\lr. Plant Partally Insured The lose sustained by The Herald and The Journal is partially covered, by insurance, the former being insured for $18,Oqo and the latter for $3,000. It is understood that the building is partially covered by insurance. The Herald today is being issued from the plant of Band & White, coin mercial printers, who unselfishly plac ed 'heir entire plant and force at the disposal of The Herald. When the fire ?was first discovered the basement and first floor were coin pletely flled with smoke. When the alarm was given that the building was on fire the employees lost no time in getting out, some getting out Just in time to prevent being overcome by the dense smoke. Flames Spread Rapidly. The flames swept through the entire plant in an exceedingly short time., and it was impossible to save anything from the building. The dense nmoko which poured through the building precluded the possibility of removing any of the machines or fixtures. The records of the company were all in the safes of The 'Hierald and Jour nal, and it is believed that no records of the company were lost. A mailing list of the tvo papers was probably saved intact. The files of the paper may have been entirely destroyed. Special values in spring seal leather umpholstered Rockern. S. M. & E. H. WILKES & CO.
