There Is only one spot in the whole
world where Christmas Is celebrated
twice each year and that is the Island
of Madagascar, off the eastern coast
of the southern end of Africa, and
which dominates that part of the In
dian ocean.
Marco Polo, the great traveler, first
made this island known to medieval
Europe in 12198. It was nearly two
htudreI years later when a Portu
gues4 traveler obtained the first au
then tic forinatloi about the island,
in 1-197. Froma that lte on there were
atteipts byv the l'ortuguese, French and
Einglish to set tle the island, and they
met witi defeat at the hands of the
vild and stivage Ilovas, who controlled

gasy fever in the lowlands of the coast.
On Christmas eve in 1672 all the
