Bones Discovered Prove That in the
Miocene Period They Were Truly
of Enormous Size.
In so far as birdst are concerned,
soine of the oldest rossiIs, in, the nit
ter of time (Miocene), whilh have
fallen into the iands of selence, are
those represeniting the great, flight
less, fossil avitn giants of 1Patagonia in
Nouth America. They belong to the
phororhaeldae, It. W. Shutfeldt writes
in the Scientific American.

Were evidently great terrestrial birds
of prey. Some of the species were
snall, but this is made up for by the
others; and In the case of one of them
(brontornis) it had a thigh bone con
siderably larger and longer than that
of till Ox.
Of all the remarkable flightless birdt
of this group, however, was the giant
phororliacos. It must have been over
eight feet in height, with it skull big
ger than that of a full grown horse,
and iili deeper from above down
ward. We know little or nothing of
these birds or what led to their ex
itnction. With Its great hooked beak
aid powerful claws of great size,
phororhaeos inust have been a terror
to the Iniinals upon whleh it preyed.
Skulls and some other bones of this
bird have been discovered.
