Tihe people of Gray Court are justly
i)roud of the splendid Rled Cross
Branch organized there on the even
Jng of February 28th, by Mr. Todd, of
Laturens. The readiness of those who
rc.pondLd to the call for membership
attsted tie interest and enthusasm
which had already been created by
a live service league and also talks by
Red Cross leaders in the several

To tell us that we are fighting for
world democracy, and that this is a
form of that democracy for which we
are to fight, and for which many of
our boys are already on the field of
'battle, is to say the least, not very
encouraging.
The negroes in this country have
rallic(dto your call in this crisis and

ability from every viewpoint.
No leople have followed so uncom
plainingly as have our people, and we
are beginning to realize now that we
are a part of this government which
we have served so faithfully both in
war and in peace. Thus we come ask
ing our government, through its ex
ecuttive, to protect us in the pursuits
of life, liberty and happiness.
Mr. President, our treatment upon
file railroads of this country is unfair,
unjust, degrading and mnchrislianlike;
and we ask that something be done to
change such conditions and make them
such as will guarantee to us peace
amd Comfort while traveling in the dis
charge of our severaL (luties.
In the face of such ti reatment, we
are being told now that we are fight
in for a common cause-freelom.
When we compare what is toldl us

speak to us.
