Columbia, S. C., Feb. 25.-In the
worst wreck on the Southern 'Railway
System in 14 years, 12 persons 'were
killed and 37 injured this afternoon
when train No. 42 hound from Spar
tanburg to Columbia, crashed into the
rear of train No. 18, from Greenville
to Columbia, at Frost, six and one-half
miles from Columhia. Both trains
eastbound. '1le wreck happened at
2:15 .. lock. All the dead were pas
rentgers. Ten were killed outright
and two (ied after being removed t(o

than half way through the next one.
llesponsibility for the wreck, otlicials
said tonight, cannot be placed until a
full investigation is made. An inquest
will be held at noon tomorrow. Points
to be established in the investigation
by railway aut horities are to ascertain
if the flagman on Irain No. 18 left a
torpedo on the track before train No.
12; if the latter train was held for
the reuiu ired time at the last station
and at. what. speed the second train
was traveling.
Railway ofllcials said tonight that
the wreck was the toast serious on the
Southern Railway System since the
collision of 1911i at New market, Tenn.,
wihen sixty people were killed.
Only one physician was ot the t wo
