ILeaman, for many years a res dent of Cross Bill, where he had many -elatives and was highly regarded, vas among the k.*ed in the Southern tallway wreck niiar Columbia Mon lay. Mr. Leaman was a traveling talesman and was well known in Lan ens, w'1ere h, had many friends. Sev ral years ago he married Miss Nannie ilagood, of Greenwood, she being his second wife. le is survived by her md several children. Among the injured were .1. 0. Mere diith, conductor, who is i brother of Mrs. W. C. P. tobertson. lie also has a sister, Mrs. Dorroh Peden, of Gray Court. and other relatives in the coun ty. lie sustained a fracture of one leg and other less serious injuries. Mirs. Robertson and Mrs. Peden went down to Columbia yesterday morning to be at his bedside. Also listed among the wounded is A. M. Kirby, of Princeton. Mr. Kirby is a young man of IS years of age. One Resident of Lanrer County. WORST WRECK IN NUMBER OF YEARS in Hear-Eind Co4lision Near Columbia dozen People are Killed and Many Others are injured, Including One Man from Laurens and Relatives of Others. Columbia, S. C., Feb. 25.-In the worst wreck on the Southern 'Railway System in 14 years, 12 persons 'were killed and 37 injured this afternoon when train No. 42 hound from Spar tanburg to Columbia, crashed into the rear of train No. 18, from Greenville to Columbia, at Frost, six and one-half miles from Columhia. Both trains eastbound. '1le wreck happened at 2:15 .. lock. All the dead were pas rentgers. Ten were killed outright and two (ied after being removed t(o Columbia hospitals. The first train had been forced to stole to repair its airbrakes. The re pairs were made and the train had just begun to moxe off when the other train struck it, the impact driving the rear ear of the forward train more than half way through the next one. llesponsibility for the wreck, otlicials said tonight, cannot be placed until a full investigation is made. An inquest will be held at noon tomorrow. Points to be established in the investigation by railway aut horities are to ascertain if the flagman on Irain No. 18 left a torpedo on the track before train No. 12; if the latter train was held for the reuiu ired time at the last station and at. what. speed the second train was traveling. Railway ofllcials said tonight that the wreck was the toast serious on the Southern Railway System since the collision of 1911i at New market, Tenn., wihen sixty people were killed. Only one physician was ot the t wo trains and he administered first aid to more than one hundred Persons suf fering from injuries or shock antil the arrival oft a special train with sur geons on board.
