Fowls Feed More Economically Than Any Other Farm Animal When Carefully Handled-Little Capt. tal Is Required. Poultry has been called the crop that never falls. It offers one of the best ways of increasing food proiduc tion on short notice. Poultry uses feed more economically probably than any other class of farm naninal when it is carefully handled. It will produce a pound of meat or eggs on four pounds of grain when protein concentrates are fed. Pullets will begin laying in from o to 8 nionths. Cockerels are ready for market at the age of 12 to 16 weeks. There is. good money in poultry and eggs If the flock is properly managed. Very little capital is required and ex pensive stock and equipment are un necessary. Careful management and feeding are more important than ex pensive equipment. Laying hens should be allowed to moult naturally. The common idea that if hens are compelled to molt early they will quickly feather out and com menco layims; early in the fall is er roneous. An early molt is rot a sign of early foll production. Usually the late-molting lien is the heavier pro .Il Trap Nest Tells Profits. necer. In fact at ack of feather growth is one of theo poits to consider when selecting hees for winter laying. Very often show birds are forced Into su Ne solt by a resti.tion of feed. 'T'his is <lone so that the birds may e in full Iea her once more for the early slow season. This should never h0 praelleedh with utility stock. It will cause 1otiutliUI- to stop and weaken the hens at a time of the year when full strength is needed. It is unwise to change the general character of the feed. The addition of sonic oil carrying ingredient, however, such as sunilower seed, will aid in the develop ment of new feathers. Chickens may be produced economi cally on city and suburban lots by utilizing the tood wastes from the kitchen. Uinder such conditions, lhens may bo kept profitably for egg produc tion. Otn farms, chicl'ens thrive on bugs, insects and worus, Reeds, wild berries, weeds and grasses, and give the clipapest meat product pound for pound. The labor required by chickens is slight, whleh is tan important consider atton whent man-lab~or is scarcc. It ennr be performedi by women, children, ('on valescenits and1( eldertly people.
