Great Lakes, Ill.-One warm June afternoon in 1808, a small boy strode into Washington barracks and an nounced to the Marine recruiting ofil cer that he wished to join the service. "I'm gojng to try my best to be a drummer boy or else a bugle boy," he announced. ,I'll work hard to maul good." Ile did "make good." That boy was John Phillip Sousa, and today his enlistment papers are treasured in the archives of the Ma rino Corps. As the years passed John Phillip Sousa gained promotion until finally he was director of the band. It was not so nmany years ago that Sousa. master musician, made a tri umphal tour of the world, playing his f h o .V 4' } TJohn Phillip Sousa (Left.) famou utares In all tie royal courts of the' world. Everywhere he was feted and hailed ats tihe world's great est marchd king. Tihe y'ears. passed and Sousa retiredi horn active nssociriti'on with thre Ma rine band, which lie had developed in to the greatest military band in the world. When this country was plunged into war Sousa, now prist miiddle age, was eager to do something for his service. Capt. William A. MotTett, command ant of the Great Lakes Naval Train ing station, Great Lakes, Ill., wished to have the station bluejacket barnd developed into the greatest in the navy. Sousa was enrolled as a lieu tenant, and musicians throughout the United States made Great Lakes their mecca. Today this band is the largest or ganizatlon of its kind in the world. s And Sousa modestly believes that lead ership of the great band of American sailor boys is as magniflcent as any thing else in his career.
