Lisbon, Dec. 14.-The farmers have been very busy gathering their crops, sowing wheat and oats, and right at this time the oats may be damaged in the sprout, yet we have taken the chancel, and not looking for this cold snap. The wheat is coming up right along and we trust that we will real ize good yields next year, to help feed ourselves, that the west can send all of theirs to the allies. 'We did not think that the people were going to sow much wheat, but our demontsra tor, P. W. Moore, worked them up to sowing it. .Mr. Moore is a wide awake, energetic, thoroughbred, high toned business gentleman of the highest type, and you can always look for ward with much interest to anything that he may undertake, so Laurens has been well blessed in getting a man like Mir. Moore. We did think a while that there would not be any cotton to pick after the holidays but there was so much cotton seed planted the last days of May and the first of .June, that we will have a right smart of scrap ping to do in .January. We hope that everybody, hot I white and black will enjby a good Christmas and then settle down to work, and work for the Lord and Master with this point in view, that we are to be better men and women, and by that we will he better to each other, and by all means do everythlig possible to help our little bit, to help the allies win this great wiar beyond the great pond. May God bless every soldier, ev en in the enemies lines. We are glad to see that the ladies of ILisbon are knitting for the soldier boys, Our heart goes out for Ihos' boys who have left their homes, tleir m1ot1hers. their wives and a weethearts. to cross the water to fight for their country. We know that some of them never will return, that is one reason it is so sad. The box supper at Mr. W. L. Teague's last Friday night was quite ai success. The proceeds went to help maata some improvement on the church. The amount realized was something over $60. The good people of Laurens alway help and the Beav erdam community feels very grateful to them. Mrs. Lillie Smith Flowers of Ameri cus, Ga., and Mrs. Frances Hunt, of Greenville, are visiting their mother, Mrs. A. J. Smith. -Mr. Alsey Madden and family will leave the Wright place to make their home at the iiamilton place, where Mr. Pearce Hipp and family have vacated and moved to their own place former ly owned by Mirs. John Wade Ander on near Laurens. Mir. Clarence Foster Smith, at Fort Bienjamin HIiarrison, F. 11. C. 6, is very much indisposed. We hope that he will soon be his usual self again. To the girls and housekeepers of 1au ren1s County: We want next year to be the banner year of South Carolina's food produc tion. The high cost of living during the last few years has stimulatecd an interest in vegetable gardening and the housewife realizes as never 'before the real value of a kitchen garden. Al though the garden produces more real proflt per acre than any other portion of the farm, it is usually the first to be neglected. Vegetables and fruits furnish a large part of the essential salts which are absolutely necessary to the well-being of the hulman system, so that the value of vegetables in the diet is a great deal more than the mucre food or money value. The need of tonics and other medicines in the spring is due largely to the lack ot vegelables and fruit in the winter diet. Start to work this 1n11itli on your spring garcideni.
