Begin in Earnest.
Greenville, Oct. 20.-Scarcely more
than three months of government oc
cupation have transformed the govern
ment reservation of 2,000 acres north
east of Greenville from forest and cul
tivated land into a scene of activity
and orderliness. Where forests stood
there are now broad parade grounds;
where there were cultivated fields are
now rows on rows of tents and mess
shacks.
For almost a month the former Na
tional Guard of Tennessee, North Car
olina and South Carolina has been en
camped here and tomorrow the last of
the selectmen, 10,000 In numiber, which
are to be sent to Camp Sevier will
have arrived. This movement will in
crease the strength of the Thirtieth
Division to about 24,500.
With practically all the soldiers who
are to form this division in camp
training will begin on a scale and with
an intensity which has not before been
attempted. LAng hikes, Work in the
trenches, attacking "(dummy Germans"
with tIe bayonet. and other drill, to fit
the soldiers for trench warfare, will
be the order of the day. 1xperts onl
all phases of warfare will be sent to
the <hmps by the war department and
they will supervise the traIning to
some extelit.
