SEVEN MEN ARE HELD FOR CRIME Auto -l'arty of Seven Now lin .Iill, Ad mit They Were 1)rlIiniI--Ietalls liard to et--Nees Was ietu rning From Funeral. Greenville, Aug. 6.--Ralph G. Neves, stable Sergeant of the head(luarters company at Camp Sevier and a wvell known local hoy. who was shot and seriolisly wounded yesterday after noon on the Travelers Rest road is restinlg fairly wevll at tlle City Ilos pital today and physicians state that lie lts chances ftr recovery. Who fired the shot which passed t hrough yoing Neves' head s'Mill remains a mystery. Seven men are now In jail In coi ection with the crime. 'hougi Ihe wound of tle youtig mau is seriolts, hope is entertained for his recovery. Three physicians are at Lee, FVirman Pright, Will lright, .ake dlone to have his life. The seven white men now in jail as a result of the shooting are: Clarence Lee, Furpnan Bright, Will BIright, Jace Carter, Lotan lHooper, ll) Waters and Will Watts. Lee and the two lright boys are fron M.\erritsville and tile other four are G3reenville men. Each man's story of the shooting differs Ili some manuner from the story told by the others. The best liuforI mation obtainable seems to be that tile SevenI iliel were in all automobile, driven by Watts, coming to Greenlville on the Travelers Rest road, a few iniles from G reenville, when tile (ar passed yoing Neves yesterday after 110011. Young Neves was on leave, having attended the fillierial yesteiday m1or11 ing of his uncle, tie late W. P. Z. P. Neves. The guardsman was retuil rning from tle fuleral ;alid was on his way back to vanip when the car colitainilig tl'e S(evl ilen passed. It is understood that the hat of one of the imien in the car blew off at this tilie and fell in tile road betweeni Neves and the auto. Neves dismount ed from his horse and pickeI tip the h'at, starting toward the Car with it. . This was about -1 o'clock in tihe after 110011i. At this point, tile statements o the seven Ielln v (Wary and are not very Ilued. Youn111g Watts stated that lie, with another of tle crowd, remaied in the (.art while tie other fellows wlent to meet Neves witIi lie hat.
