life, capitalists, baikers. nerchants I
and far-mers are subscribing to the is- I

liberty which the Uinited State is
now wagilng. F
All buntks have opened their doors I
to applications for the bond-i; so that<
any person who desires the boulld has ,
only to go to any bank in his town
where his application will be immedl- I
ately entered. The Ameri-an people, I
and especially the farmers and mer
chants of the South, have not been a
bond investing people to any extent;
but tinder tho drive of patriotic ent hu
siasm. they have rallied to the Iiherty
Loan idea by the hundreds of thicons
ands; and small wago earne.: every
where hiave rcs ponded with every
manifestation of eagerness.
This has exteided to the utmiOt
farm districts of the state. LIocal
committees have been organized in
every c'ommunnity; men in autoimo
biles have volunteered to see every
farmer of any iea ins in the entire
farming districts and these bave beeni
followed ij by salesnien of various
kinds who htave gone so far as to pro
duce the application blank and secure
the farmer's signature.
The "luy a Bond for Baby" slogan
has become popular in thotisands of
homes. Governor Manning himself
showed the way by subscribing for
-jventy bonds, one each for himself,
\4is wife, a daughter, seven sons and
ten grandchildren. Following his lead,
parents in every direction have in
vested in the bonds for their chil
dren to serve as a tfoundation for A say
ingo fund for the little tots, to be
added to in years to come.
Practically all the big corporations
of the state have arranged plans
whereby their employees could secure
the bonds by having small sums de
ducted weekty fron their pay enve
lopes. Many mrchants in the larger
towns have establIshced booths in their
stores at which applications blanks
could be signed and information se
cured. Most bants have worked ont
plans where by tho honds could be
bought on tlie installment plai.
One of the greatest contributions
to the camcpiaigi which has yet. been
insttituted has been the action of the
insurance ncect of t ;tite. hoth life

Although June 5th was officially des
ignated as LAberty Bond lDay, on
which there should be 'definite efforts
to secure a subscription from every
man in the state, the campaign is by
no means over. It will not end untit
June 15, the day upon which sub
scriptions cease. There will. there
fore, be no diminut-ion of effort on the
part of the numerous committees who
have the promotion of the sales in
charge. It is earnestly desired by the
government and by the Liberty Loan
Central Committee 'or South Caro
lina that the allottment of $8.500,000
which has been assigned to this state
be several times oversubscribed. Tlw
effect of having this bond issue over
su-hseribed will have the same moral
effect upon tie enemy as a great de
feat; and this is what is trying to be
secured.
Liberty Bonds are Ithe st.rongest
security that. any man may own. They
have the backing of the greatest goy
ernment on earth. tWhey are absolutely
secure, and the monny thus derived is
to be utsed in fighting the battles of thd
govornenit.
