The following statement in regard to the proposed Carolina Rapid Transit Company has been issued by J. F. Jacobs of Clinton, chairman of the Board of Corporators: Mr. Reid Tull, Chief Engineer of the Carolina Rapid Transit Company, has just finished the field work in the sur vey, and begins the office work in the preparation of the engineering report, collection of commercial data, etc., this week. Two lines and in some cases three lines have been run, with a view to the final adoption of the most feas ible route, measured in he light of the cost of construction, cost of operation, the mileage, and the degree of co-op eration given by the people on the com peting lines, the plan being to connect Spartanburg, Union, Laurens and Clin ton by a rapid electric transit system for freight and passengers. 'Mr. Tull advises that the cost of this line fully equipped, built in an A-I manner with maximum grade of 1 per cent and maximum curvature of 6 degrees, heavy rail, heavy overhead construction, first class 60-foot ex press cars and heavy electric engines for the first service will be about $50, 000 per mile. The mileage is about sixty-two miles, so that the actual cost of construction and equipment will be upwards of $3,000.00, exclusive of any possible power development which may be involved in the proposition. Mr. Tull is mugh pleased with the character of the country traversed and with the volume of business evidently to be had for such a line. The actual facts and figures of the cost will not develop until the engineering and con inercial reports are complete. The work will be done very thoroughly and when finished, will be laid before the people of the three counties in full de tail. The engineering corps has had in charge the securing of rights of way, and fully 95 per cent of the rights of way are already in hands In a few in.. stances there has been a lack of co operation, and such instances are like- I ly to work greatly to the disadvantage I of tihe line of survey on Mwhich they oc cur. After Decem ber 31st one per cent will be adided. After .January 31st, two per cont will be added, and after February 28th, seven per cent will be added till the 15th day of March, 1917, when the books will be closed. All persons owning property in more than one Township are request ed to call for receipts in each -of the several Townships in which the pro perty is located. This is important, as additional cost and penalty may be attached. All able-bodied male citizens be tween the ages of.21 and 60 years of age are liable to pay a poll tax of $1.00 except old soldiers, who are exempt at 50 years of age. The line will no doubt be located where the largest co-operation is de veloped, for in nearly all cases the com petitive surveys are pretty well bal anced as regards cis tof construction anced as regards cost of construction be largely a question of the degree of o-operation afforded by the. people along a given line as to whether the railroad will be built along that line :r not. By co-operation is meant free rights of way, free town sites, exten iive subscriptions to capital stock, etc. It becomes moreand more clear that the people of the three counties are ioing to build the line, but it is not certain along what line of survey it will be built. Hence, it will be great ly to the interest of the people on or near any of the lines of survey to put forth their extremest endeavor to give the heartiest possible co-operation to those who have the matter in charge; that is, if they care to conserve their )wn interests, as well as advance the interest of their county. The subscriptions made to the ex penses of survey and the initial ex penses of organization have ony been paid in part. There remains to be col lected considerable sums in Spartan berg, Union, Glenn Springs, Cedar Springs, Cross Anchor, Walnut Grove, West Springs and Laurens. Only two points have paid their subscriptions :omplete, Tylersville and Clinton. The funds in hand will pay the ex penses of the' engineering corps for ibout one month further. Hence it is 3xtremely desirable that the Boards of Trade and public spirited citizens in the above mentioned communities which are still short on their collec ions get busy at once and collect up he entire volume of funds subscribed, )lacing same to the credit of the Caro Ina Rapid Transit Company Board of ,orporators.
