tically all of the 25,000 troops ordered
today by the war department to pro
ceed to the border will be sent to El
Paso, Gen. Frederick Funston an
nounced tonight. A few will be sta
tioned at Doming, N. M.
\Vhen the new movement is con
conpare in o ciency with the colleges
ploted there will be an army of about
70,000 men at El Paso, including Na
tional Guardsmen and regulars.
Military men here were careful to
point out tonight that there is abso
lutely no signifleance in the movement.
They explained that while the marsing
of so large a body of troops at El Paso
would be the natural strategy in case
of hostilities because of that. city's lo
cation at the northern end of the
Mexlcan Central and Mexico North
western railways, it was now only a
part of the general mobilization.
At the same time, it was said, the
troops would be in a position where
they could do the -nost good If they
ever were needed for active service.
.lust as soon as the new detachments
a.ive at El Paso they will be used
with othr guardsinen already there,
exclusive of the i'ennsylvanla division,
to form three new divisions. Each of
the divisions will fall considerably
short of paper sirength but it is esti
nmated that each will have from 17,0001
to 18,000 men.
It was pointed out at Fort Sam
Ilouston that failure to bring the
Ohio, \'erinont and Kentucky (Guards
mien to the border before now was due
not to poor I i ilsort at ion facilities orb
any other condition, but solely to lack
of eluillient.

'Texarkana, Ark., Aug. 9.-The I irst
South Carolina regiment entered Texas
this afternoon. It will have to traverse
the entire length of the State before
reaching its destination, 10l Paso. It
will be Friday before the end of the
journey is reached.
Memnphis, Tenn., gave the Palmetto
boys a hearty reception. A committee
headed by Gen. S. T. Carver had wired
Col. Blythe as follows: "Kindly wire
if troops can lay over long enough to
get a s'vini in the pool and to be served
with sandwiches and coffee." Col.
Blythe replied: "tegret exceedingly
can not avail ourselves of your kind
offer because of lateness of arrival."
Althoegh It was 2 a. in. when Meon
plis was reached Gen. Carver was at
the depot and asked permission to
send 500 sandwiclsc into the train.
They made a grateful addition for
breakfast this morning.
The Mississippi river was Gross,(t at
Memlphis and the route today has been
through Arkansas. A stop was made
at Little lock and the men were
given exercise.
Every one continued to comment on
the fine showing and the splendid be
havior of the South Carolina troops.

a buirglar. Rloy Snlith, the cighit-year
old son of Sai Smith, a well known
farner of the I'ork Shoals section. was
shot and instantly killed last. night by
his brother-in-law. .lohn Sullivan, at
MIr. Slliiva n's lIoaae. The coroner's
jury returned a verdict that. the sho (ot
ing was acidental, thus exonerating
Sullivan.
