CITY TRAFFIC AND TRANSPORTATION Electric Traction is Superior to Other Systems. THE LOOP OR BELT LINE, Modern Methods of Carrying Passen. gore In Cities Have Released the City From the Bondage of Slow Travel and Have Stimulated Urban Growth. By FRANK KOESTICIt, author of "Mod ern City 1'Inming and Maintenance," etc. Electric traction has superseded both the cable and horse car road. It has made surface travel as speedy as Is consistent with safety, and It has enabled business to he concentrated in the centers of cities and homes to be located in the outlying districts. Elec tric traction has in a few decades re leaseil the city from the bondage of slow transportation and has stimulated urban growth in a way that would never have been possible under other conditions. The only rival of electric tralton Is the automobile, for the most part a gasoline engine driven vehicle. In the form of conhes or busses it is used to a great extent In London anad to it lesser degree in other cities. but it seetms quIte nnlikely that It will ever becoine i serious rival of electric trae tion in the form of cars on riols.
