UPON TIlE SITUATION
Says Time Has About Come When We
Should Take a Firm Stand and
Stick to It.
Washington, April 21.-Members of
congress and everybody else in Wash
ington City were guessing today over
the course Germany is likely to take
with regard to the action of 'President
Wilson. In many quarters a belief is
growing that Germany wil recede
from her position and comply with
the demands of the United States.
"Perhaps the wish, though," said one
member on reflection, "is father to
the thought."
One view that is held quite ex
tensively is that Germany might de
sire to have the United States come
in to give her a good excuse for nego
tiating proposals for peace "instead of
trying to whip the world," Rep. J.
Thomas Ilelilin, of Alabama, partly
shared this view. "I think they will
either yield or get us in so they can
say they can't whip the world, he
said. "So far they've whipped to a
standstill those they have been fight
ing."
Congressman Samuel J. Nicholls, of
the Fourth South Carolina district,
said he would resign his seat in con
gress at any time to defend the honor
and integrity of his state. Congress
man Nicholls holds a commission as
a captain in the reserve corps of his
state.
"I think the time has about come
when we should take a firm stand
and stick to it."
Mr. Nicholls said that he does not
want. war, but he believes that in case
of war South Carolina will always
stand where she has stood in the past
-"to take care of the interests of this
government." lie does not believe,
however, that. Germany is going to do
anything. "They're going to agree to
everything we ask them to."
