I 1.-Senator Smith of South Carolina today intro duced in the senate a resolution, which was adopted, calling upon the secretary of agIiculture to gather data and subtit it. to the senate rela tive to the fertilizer sittutiont, partic ularly with reference to potash. Senator Siith yesterday sent to the commissioners of agriiet'lture throughout the South the following int(piry: "Vliat in your opinion will he the effect on the yield of cotton per acre in your state if the present fertilizer situation is not improved, especially as to potash"? i1rom each he received replies to the effect that the reduction in yield per acre would be anywhere from 5 to 5ILT per cent. In discussing the purport of the resolution '.
