SEVENTEEN AMERICANS
KILLED BY MEXICANS
Bandits Capture Train and After Rob
bing American Miners, Shoot Them.
Cayranza Promises to 'unikh Guilty
El Paso, Texas, Jan. 11.--Seventeen
persons, all believed to have been
Americans,. were killed by Mexican
bandits yesterday after being taken
from a Mexico Northfwestern train 50
miles west of Chihuahua City, robbed
and stripped of their clothing, accord
ing to a message received here to
night by Hi. C. lyles, British vice
consul here, from British Consul
Scovell at Chihuahau City.
The train on which the Americans
were traveling from Chihuahua City
to Cusihuiriachic, Chihuahua, carried
thousands of dollars in currency and
a large (quantity of supplies sent by
the American Smelting and Refining
company to its mines in Cusihuiria
chic.
It is believed here that all the IS
American mining men known to have
been in Chihuahua 'City were on board
the looted train.
Thomas 1. 1loimes, the only known
survivor, stated. however, in his brief
telegram giving the first news of the
iald that he counted but 16 Ameri
cans taken from the train.
It is supposed the bandits belonged
to the forces of Gen. Jose Rodriquez,
a Villa supporter, known to be op
erating in Chihuahua against the de
facto government of Mexico.
Almost. immediately after the first
news was received a censorship was
imposed on the wires between Juarez
and Chihuahua City by the Carranza
ofilcials. This action was taken, it
was said, "until the story could be
verified from otilcial Mexican sources.'
According to the brief messages re
ceived here the train bearing the
Americans was stopped by the bandits
about 50 miles west of fClihunhut'
City. The mining men were taken
from the train, robbed, stripped naked
and lined up along the cars for cxc
cution. Ilolmes was said to have been
on the extreme end of the line and as
the tiring squ1ad look position, h(
broke away and fled into the desert
With feet and holy cut and bleeding
from stones and sharp cactus, lie rain
until he no longer heard the whistlc
of bullets pass him. lie succeeded ini
reaching friendly Mexicans, it is re
ported, and was aided to return tc
Chihuahua City.
The first news of the bandit raid
was received here through a tele
gram from lolmes to officials of th
smelting company asking them tc
notify' his wife that he had reached
Chihuahua City.
IHis message aroused anxiety con
cerning the fate of the other mer
known to have left Chihuahua Cit)
for Cusihuiriachic, and before the
censorship was imposed they suceced
ed in getting into communication withi
mining men in Chihuahua City whc
furnished the brief details of the at
tack.
The Americans, it was said, had as
surances of protection given the
smelting company by the Carranza
government through the Unaited
States state departnment.
The~ report of the killing of the
employes is taken by mining men to
mean that an alleged order issued
by Glen. Villa upon his return froml
Sonora and after hIs family had ar
rived in Cuba, was to be obeyed
This supposed order to "kill all
IAmericans, loot and.burn"w had 'been
reiterated by bands returning froir
Sonora. It was this order that it
believed to have resulted in the death
recently of Peter Keane, bookkeeper
of the Hparst interests near Madera,
Chihuahua, at the hands of Villa
bandits.
A protest addressed to Pr'esident
Wilson was signed tonight by mining
men wvho ar'e here in hundreds pre
