A national movement is being put
on foot to set aside one week during
the month of February as "Pay Up

ought to be encouraged. Laurens
ought to have itself included in it.

Young New York Lawyer Calls For
Sealed Bids.
New York, Jan. 7.-No denying the
nerve of Clinton B. Smith, Jr., a
young lawyer of Flushing, L. 1. But
he must also be credited with some
mode tsy.
More than 100 society girls on Jan
uary 1 received the following card:
"Nineteen sixteen being leap year,
Mr. Clinton B. Smith, Jr., begs to an
nounce that he is still ia bachelor."
That is where his nerve came in. As
for his modesty, he offered as an add
ed attraction to himself the following:
"V. B. His antique furniture goes
with him."
The young man, who practises law
with hM'. father, was asked in his
office in Flushing yester..ay if the
sending out of the cards was a joke.
"If youi saw some of the answers I
received, you wouldn't thinik so," he
reto rte..(.
The term ":,irls," used abave, may
bc mislead'ng. lie played no favor
i'es in age. Spinisters regarded as
having years ago given up hope also
got cards.
Indications are that lie has invited
a siege and may be begging Cupid for
a leap year imoratiorium. For Smith
is prosperous, good looking, a neat
dancetr and cleveri on the links. And
his anti'ue fu:nituire collection is said
to ie "(tiute lovely."
