B. Boland and W. S. Knight represented Brewerton and Ware Shoals Lodges in the Grand Lodge meeting in Charleston. Miss Lolita Reeves won the prize In a recent "spelling bee' at Ware Shoals. Mr. Jas. Carlisle shredded a fine lot of corn for Mr. John W. Gambrell. Mr. G. B. Riley attended the Bap tist convention in Greenville. . Mr. and Mrs. J'. H. Blackwell have mnoved to Ekom, Laurens county. We regret their departure for they were splendid neighbors, and have always been warm supporters of all progres aive measures. Dr. W. Townes Jones lost a valua ble horse and will thank those indebt ed to him to settle. There will be a Christmas tree here on next Monday, the 27th inst., at 2 o'clock p. i. Everybody is cordially invited to attend. There was a good roads meeting at Ware Shoals on the 17th inst. Dr. W. T. Jones presided and the meeting was opened with prayer by Rev. J. M. Dallas. J. F. MacEnroe, Rev. Hey dock, J. C. Gambrell, W. C. Cobb, IRev. J. M. Dallas, T. .1. Beacham, Ed Gaines and others participated in the discus sion of the plans suggested to build better roads. IRev. .J. The dedicatory services of the Bap tist church at Ware Shoals was held yesterday. Rev. lleydock, the pastor presided. Rev. J. T. Taylor delivered the dedicatory prayer. Rev. John Men, of Greenville, gave a brief sketch of the efforts put forth in the crection of the church and Dr. Derieux of Colui bia, preached the dedicatory sermon. Madden, Dec. 20.-We are glad to see the clear, cold days after the warm, rainy spell, for several of us had porkers to kill for the holidays and the weather is now just right for that. Mr. and Mrs. Simpson Bailey are on a visit to her mother, Mrs. H. C. Cun ningham and sister, Mrs. Thurman Finlay. They have moved from Seda lia to a farm of Mr. Tom Shaw's and their many friends wish for them a successful year in our midst. Several moves have been made in our immediate neighborhood. Mr. Miller and family of Woodrow Wilson section have moved to the home vacated by Mr. Jim Cheek and family, the latter have moved to Watts Mill. Mr. G. W. Proffitt and family have moved to the Miss Martin farm and Mr. Chapman and family of Cross 11111 will move to the farm known as Boyd's Cross Roads. We welcome all these good people and hope they will soon feel at home in our midst. We are expecting several more new neighbors in our midst. Mr. Ed Bolt is to move to the old Teague place, now owned by J. S. Machen. We are mighty glad to see white people m1ov ing to this farm that for two or three years has been turned over to negroes. The holidays are bringing home those who have gone from us. Miss Juanita Martin who has been travel ing for the past two years in Ohio and Kentucky arrived Saturday to spend fhe holidays with homefolks. Mlr. P. H. Martin, guard in the Fed eral prison, Atlanta, came in Sunday. Mr. Erastus Mladden who is taking a business course in Atlanta is home for Christmas. Messrs John Moore Hudgens and Ryan Martin of Piedmont College are expected in the 23rd. Cadets Wofford and Brown, of Clemson will arrive on the 22nd. Miss Kate Wofford of Win throp will also come on the 23rd and Miss Azile Wofford of Luray will be here the 24th. -Friday was observed by teachers, pupils and a few of the patrons as "Clean-Up Day" at New Prospect school. I wasn't there but things they tell me are "ship-shape" now. The friends of Mrs. J. R. Finley will I glad to know that her face is now thought to be healing rapidly. Miss Susie Langstonm went down in the Holly Grove section to attend the silver wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Blake ly, on December 18th. All male citizens between the ages of 21 and 60 years on the 1st of Jan uary except those who are incapable of earning a support from being Malimed or from other causes, are deemed Polls, Confederate veterans excepted. Also all male citizens between the ages of 18 and 50 on the 1st day o1 January, 1917, are liable to a road tax of $1.50 and are required to make their return of same to the. Auditor during the time above, specified and shall pay to the County Treasurer at !he same time other taxes. are paid in lieu of working the road. All taxpayers are required to give township and number of school dis trict; also state whether property is situated in town or country. 1laeh lot, tract or parcel of land must be en tered separately. After the 20th of February 50 per cent penalty will be attached for fail ure, to. make returns. J. W. THOMPSON, County Auditor NOTICE Of The COUNTY TBEASURER The Books of the County Treasurer will be opened for the collection of State, County and Commutation Road Taxes for fiscal year, 1915, at the Treasurer's office from Obtober 15th to December 31st, 1916. After Decem ber 31st one per cent will be added. After January 31st, two per cent will be added, and after February 28th. seven per cent will, be added till the 15th day of March,- 1916, when the books will be closed. All persons owning property in mnre than one Township are request ed to call for receipts in each of the several Townships in which the pro perty is located. This is important, as additional cost and penalty may be attached. All able-bodied male citizens be tween the ages of 21 and 60 years of ago are liable to pay a poll tax of $1.00 except old soldiers, who are exempt at 50 years of age.
