Cross 11111, Nov. 22.--.\rs. Amanda
.Motes of Mlountville, onle among the
best. Christian women it has ever been
our pleasuirei to know, died Satiriday
afterloonl and was buriled Sunlday af
teinoon In the old fami ly bu'ying
gr~ound nlear hier home. The funler-al
services were held at I he Baptist
(churtch conducted by her pastor, Rev.
.1. A. Maartini, assisted by her cousin,
Rev. .1. T. Miller. The crowded house
was proof of the high esteem and un
feigned love in which the deceased
was held by all who knew her. Dur
ing the service our thoughts went out
to the homes of the world. We could
see a few fathers and mothers work
ing and praying to leave their children
a good example, while many others are
wearing themselves out to leave their
(immrediate descendents a linancial comn
petency, and maybe to the neglect of
the more important life. As we
thought. upon these things we could
not avold the conclusion that the
greatest heritage a mother can leave
her onlty soi is an unspotted Chrlis
tian life, full of sweet memories of
imotherly love and care and coilnsel.
Thbis legacy we thought was surely
the inheritance of "Aunt Manda'st'
only boy, .1. llogan Motes, whose great
loss and grief can find some relief at
ieast. i the soothing haltm of such a
iiemtiory. 'I'hen we thought too that.
the long life if 80 years, filled as it
was with klinfaess, tenderness, faith,
atid pitity is an untold and inestitma
ble blessing upon a community in
which it was spent. Besides her son
Mrs. Motes leaves one brother, J. C.
Miller, and a large number of other
relatives to mioun the loss of a well
spent. life. H(er friends are limited on
ly by ac(liintaice and her eneimy is
unknown. May the Christ whom sihe
loved and trusted and served speak
peace and comfort to the troubled
hearts who keeiv'st. feel an unretriev
able loss.
At a "fish supper" given at a negro
house two miles fromt Cross 1111i on
the Lautrens road Saitrda) night, a
general atnd promiscuous row was
started In the yard in which pistols,
rocks and other things were freely
ised. 'The resultl was one itan, John
Sanders, was killed and two others,
l'ierce Irby an(] Paul Jackson, were
slight.ly woundied. Coroner Ilairston
held an Inqiest over the body of John
anders Sunday afternoon, but failed
to osccure any suiileient evidence oin

A few nights ago Mr. Robert M. 11111
caught an oppossiil the color of which
was that of a hu'ff cat. Iunters say
this is a very unusual color and we
have failed to find one who has ever
seen such. This peculiar game weighed
eight pounds.
Mr. John Neal lost a fine mule Sat

Cross 11111. The animal is said to have
been in fine condition, rather overly
fat, and dropped in the road as Mr.

few minutes.
