A recent issue of The Atlanta Con
stitution contained the account below
of an assault made upon Rtev. Virgil
Keniedy, a former Laurens county
citizen, at his home in Edwardsville,
Ala. A clipping from The Constitu
tion, containing the account of the af
fair, was sent to The Advetriser by a
friend of IRev. Kennedy with a few
lines in commendation of him, stat
ing that he wats a "good honorable

the P.rinucetonu commituunity, where the
details of the affair will be of par

E'dwardsville, Ala., October J9.
Rev. Virgil Kennedy, a preacher of the
Holiness church, crawled from his
burning home Sunday morning just In
time to avoid death by crematic a, af
ter having been assaulted at mid
night Saturday night by a mob at his
residence at Lecta, in Cleburne county.
Rev. Kennedy had retire(d earlier in
the night, but was aroused about mid
night by a pis ol shot, the ball enter
ing his bedroon. 11e leaped from his
be(i to extinguish the light, and a see
on(d bullet carried away two of his
fingers, an others penetrated his right
arm and body.
The minister's wife, two iaughters
and young son fled hurriedly by the
back way; the m inster got 1into his
bed. Members of the mob broke
through a window, pulled him out of
his bed, beating Wmn and slasjhing him
with knives. 4
Believing him dead, they set fire to
the house, It is claimed, and dispersed
quietly. It Is alleged that most of them
lived nearby, but sorse left the scene
in automobiles, which were traced for
several miles.
One lone friend of the minister heard
the uproar, and was hastening to his
assistance, but watchers" who had
been left in every direction, detected
his approach, and a few well-aimed
shots sent him hurrying back.
Mrs. Kennedy and her children
reached the home of a friendly neigh
hor and reported the "murder" of Rev.
Kennedy and the burning of the home.
Thie fire iroused inany people of the
