A recent issue of The Atlanta Con stitution contained the account below of an assault made upon Rtev. Virgil Keniedy, a former Laurens county citizen, at his home in Edwardsville, Ala. A clipping from The Constitu tion, containing the account of the af fair, was sent to The Advetriser by a friend of IRev. Kennedy with a few lines in commendation of him, stat ing that he wats a "good honorable mnan." Rlev. The following is the account ais contained in 'The Consti tution': E'dwardsville, Ala., October J9. Rev. Virgil Kennedy, a preacher of the Holiness church, crawled from his burning home Sunday morning just In time to avoid death by crematic a, af ter having been assaulted at mid night Saturday night by a mob at his residence at Lecta, in Cleburne county. Rev. Kennedy had retire(d earlier in the night, but was aroused about mid night by a pis ol shot, the ball enter ing his bedroon. 11e leaped from his be(i to extinguish the light, and a see on(d bullet carried away two of his fingers, an others penetrated his right arm and body. The minister's wife, two iaughters and young son fled hurriedly by the back way; the m inster got 1into his bed. Members of the mob broke through a window, pulled him out of his bed, beating Wmn and slasjhing him with knives. 4 Believing him dead, they set fire to the house, It is claimed, and dispersed quietly. It Is alleged that most of them lived nearby, but sorse left the scene in automobiles, which were traced for several miles. One lone friend of the minister heard the uproar, and was hastening to his assistance, but watchers" who had been left in every direction, detected his approach, and a few well-aimed shots sent him hurrying back. Mrs. Kennedy and her children reached the home of a friendly neigh hor and reported the "murder" of Rev. Kennedy and the burning of the home.
