Will you permit a few remarks rela
tive to the road work and finances of
Laurens county?
The tax levy for road and bridge
,vork is 3 mills, yielding in 1913 it
rouni numbers, $21,000. For same
year add a commutation tax.of some
$6,000, or a grand total of some $27,000
from which deduct $2,250.00 Interest
on 1909 bridge bonds, leaving for road
and bridges net. somo $25,000. of which
some $6,000 annually will be required
for upkeep of bridges, leaving avail
able for road work of all kinds, in
-luding culverts, some $19,000, or $12
to $15 per ile for building and main
tainig roads, which would not main
tain improved roads, if we had thei
already built. Still from this allow
ance nust be paid all roa( and cul
vort work, whether by chaingang or
road overseer, the widening, grading.

present. road funds of the county are
little more than sufielent to maintain
the roads of tle county in their pres
