Washington, July 1.-With the sec ond largest acreage ever recorded and witr the Prospects of proluction prob ably equal to or better than those of last year, the growing cdtton crop of the United States today was report ed by tile department of agriculture rhalTI'I t.I..lltj. is beIng 79.6 per cent of a normat with the area in cultivation as 36,960, 000 acres. The conlitionl of the crop is slight ly tmore than 1 per cent under June 1. Bad weather early in the season caus ed damage in sone sections, but dur ing June conditions in those localities improved greatly. In Texas, where on May 25 the condition was 65 per cent of a normal, the .lune 25 report show -ed a condition of 71 per cent; in Okla homna it improved from 68 to 79, in North Carolina fro m76i to 82 and in South Carolina from 72 to 81. The area in cultivation is -198,000 acre or 1.3 Per cent less tillan the re vised acreage in cultivation a year ago. Oklahoma reported an 8 per cSent decrease and Texas and Virginia a 5 per cent decrease. In California tile area was more than doubled and Louisiana reported an increafe of 10 per cent in acreage.
