Hampton, May 14.-This morning the town of Varnville was visited by one of the largest and most disatrous fires ever seen in this section. The loss of $70,000 is a conservative esti mate placed on the actual damages, while the total insurance was only $22,100. The fire, which originated on the second floor of the Varnville Furniture company, from thence spread out in both directions, destroy ing six other business houses, together with adjoining warehouses, stables, barns, etc. It was discovered at 3:30 a. m. and raged for two hours and a half and not until every business house on the south side of Main street was completely destroyed was it pos sible to get it under control. The in dividual losses art as follows: Varn ville Hardware and Supply company, $20.006, covered by $5,000 insurance; Mortimc'r Murdaugh, $10,000 with $1.000 insurance; W. 0. Hattie Gray and Herbert Sullivan were honorably mentioned in connection with this contest. The medal offered by the Henry Laurens chapter, D. A. R.. for the highect sebotarship in U. S. Herbert Sullivan was also men tioned as making a very creditable showing in the rivalry for this medal. rhe medal annually offered by a friend of the school, who does not allow his name to be mentioned, for the best scholarship exhibited during the three year high school course, was award ed to Hattie Gray. Herbert Sullivan came second in this contest and Vir ginia Simpson third. All of - the marks were very close together. The diplomas aid certificates were then delivered. Gifts and Hemembrances. On behalf of the graduating class Loiise Simmons presented to the school an E.dison Kinetoscope or "moving picture machine" to be used in school work. Instead of making a presentation speech, however, she took the opportunity to present a gold-handled knife as a parting gift to Mr. Jones from the graduating class. 'Mr. Jones expressed his thanks for the gift to himself in a few words and then for the school accepted the kinetoscope. While flowers and pros ents from friends were being brought in to members of the graduating class, Mr. Jones took the opportunity to tell of the uses to which the machine would be put and also went at length into some of the accomplishments of its great inventor. Prof. Barton then stepped forward and presented to Mr. .Jones, on behalf of the teachers, a gold watch -fob as a token of thlei love and to show their appreciation of his work at this school. May 25.-It has recentry been stated by the officials of the or gauLsed bank of this town, that it will be erected during the summer, and the bank will be in operation about the last of August or September the first. A bank is needed in this town, and we see no reason why it should not prove a success in every way. The friends of Miss Sue A. Owings, who has been in a sanitarium in Ash ville for her health, is now at home on a visit, and expects to see numer ous friends and loved ones before she returns. We are glad to know that shs is regaining lie strength, and we hope she will son be well and enjoying good health. Mrs. Geo. L. Willis was glad to have Mr. J. T. Holder and family visit her last Saturday. Mr. and 'Mrs. J. T. Stoddard were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Dolfus C. Owings last Wednesday. Misses Nita Hunter and Cecil Ow Ings have recently returned from Chi cora. We feel sure that they were glad to get home, and we hope their vacation will iprove a genuine Pleas u re. T. A. Willis, Jr. was in the Woods ville vicinity last Thursday afternoon. Quite a number of folks of this town attended the exercises given by the children of Dials church last Sun day afternoon. The house was crowd ed, and it seemed almost impossible to seat all the people. Notwithstand ing the discomfort of the church, the eyes of the crowd were fixed .pn the chil" ren during the entire program. The program was a success in every way, and all felt that the program committee had excellent taste and judgment in preparing this work. All who attended the exercises feel that they have been beneflted by attending, and regret that such occasions are not given evenry few weeks. lIhenninism Quickly Cured.
