The contestants were all on hand. The contestants for choosing sides were Messrs Brooks and Mahaffey of the Eden community. The latter's side won. The book used for the spelling was the old Blue Back Spell er. The invitation was free for old and young and we think the older heads did the best spelling, especial ly the ladies. Prof. Charles F. Brooks, of Lau runs, who has been a great worker as a teacher and benefactor in our Eden school in his talented way, conducted the spelling match. Visitors from oth er schools were present. We had ex cellent music performed by the Eden string band. After the exercises were over a delicious bounty of cream and cake were served. The occasion was greatly enjoyed by all present. Our teacher, Mrs. Roper, is one among the best in the county. It requires a great deal of brain and talent, too, to make a good teacher and she has both and knows how to use them. " * * * * * * * * * * * .Youngs, Aprils 27.-The 'following are the delegates from Youngs to the county convention at Laurens, the first Monday in May. Messrs. Austin Abercrombie, .1. II. Abercrombie, W. P. Harris, Dock Henderson and Elijah Riddle. The School Iimprovement associa tion will meet at Youngs school this afternoon for the purpose of electing a delegate to represent us at Rock hill the 7th and 8th of May. Mr. Robt. Stewart and family of Lanford visited relatives here Sunday afternoon. Misses Beulah and Amera Garrett of' Fountain Inn, visited Mr. Alexan der Abercrombie's family Sunday. Mr. T. Farrow and Mr. Charlie Wilkie and family visited Mr. Wilkie's brother in this community Sunday. The sick of the neighborhood are somewhat improved. The farmers are yet very busy planting and preparing to plant. Some have already planted. Grain is look ing fine. Adams, and Hlaskell Atchi son. A resolution was adopted advising some reform in the primary. Every thing was quiet and without friction. -W'. W. Ball and wife of Columbia, Mace Copoland and wire and Mrs. B. WV. Ball, of Lauroens, spent Saturdlay with Mr. and Mrs. M. T. Simpson. Messrs. Henry and William and Misses Julia and Sarah Fellers of Co lumbia spent Sunday night with W. P. Culbertson and family. They came up Sunday morning in their touring car. Miss Ethel Dukes of this place and Mr. Eugene Allan of Chappells were married here Sunday afternoon, Rev. J. A. Martin officiating. The young couple have many friends who extend congratulations. Wal drop delightfully entertained a crowd of young people at her home Friday night, April 24 from eight to eleven o'clock. Many interesting games were played, after which the crowd was invited to the porch which was beau tifully decorated with cut flowers, where delicious cream was served. Those enjoying the afternoon were .isses Nora Cunningham, Minnie Lanford, Robin Patterson, Carie Lou Higgins, Marie Yarborough, Othella Johnson, Louise and Sarah Wolff Car rie Fowler and Hester Hembree; Messrs. The community was pained to hear of the death of Mrs. Milam which oc curred at her home in Laurens Sat urday, last. Mrs. Milam was a resi dest of Lanford for a number of years. None knew her but to love her. Sev eral from here attended her funeral at Ora Sunday afternoon. Mr. Oscar Thomas was carried to the Steedly hospital Sunday where he underwent an operation. He is getting along nicely. The schol at this place will close Monday night with a play, "In the Spider's Web". The public Is invited. " " * MOUNTVILLE NEWS. * " s Mountville, April 27.-In the annu al municipal election held last Sat urday, the following were elected: V. M. Fuller, intendant; J. I. Motes, S. J. Rasor, .Tno. Matthews and L. B. Blease, wardens. Messrs. Rasor and Matthews were members of the old council. Messds. Henry and William Fuller, with their sisters Misses Julia and Sara, came up from Columbia Sunday by auto and will visit friends here for a few days. We welcome these young people in our midst again. Cadet Robert Thornton of Clemson college spent Saturday and Sunday with his mother. Mrs. W. P. Fuller left last we-,k for Atlanta, where she will undergo treat ment in a hospital. "Aunt Amnanda" has been indisposed for some months, and hert many friends will be glad to) hear of her improvement. Our new school building is rapidly nearing completion and is wInning the admiration of all who see it. The contractors assure us they will leave the auditorium ready for the closing exercises of thuis session.
