A. Knapp was this: "Produce all the feed required for men and anti mals on the farm." As a rule the Southern farmer does not take advan tage of all the possibilities of his soil. If the house garden is taken care of, as it should be, it will supply cheap and wholesome food for the farmer. We must save the 'waste fruits and preserve the vegetables for winter use. The demonstration work seeks to reach the farmer, his bovs, girls, and his wife. In I90S Dr. Knapp, the patron saint of agriculture. believing that girls in the rural districts should have the same advantages as boys, organized the girls into Tomato Clubs. It Was decided that one tenth of an acre sholted be planted in tomatoes. Later each girl was uirged to plant some other kind of vegetables and to (all Surplus fruits. The objects of the Girls' Demonstra tion Work are: 1) To encou irage rural families to Provide puer and better food at a lower cost, to utilize the surplus and otherwise waste Products of tlte or Chard and garden. ('2) To stimulate interest and wholesolle 'O-operatlon among liemil hers of the family in the home. (3) 'To provide some means by which girls may earn money at home, and at the same time get the educa tion and viewpoint necessary for the ideal farm life. (1) To open the way for practical demonstrations in home econonics. (5) To furnish earnest teachers a plan for aiding their pupils and help ing their communities. Another object of this work is not to get a few girls into the business of canning vegetables for market, but to get many 'girls to growing good home gardens and filling their mioth e's' pantry for winter with canned vegetables and fruits. Girls joining the cltb must he be tween the ages of ten and eighteen year:. Special clases will be organ ized for older girls. In these clubs we want only girls who are enthusiastic. CGirls who have determination, pIerse Vetanice, and a desire to learn. girls who w\ill make up thevir miods to stiek to the vork. Dir. Much has been said and written con cering free local transportation for rural schools. South Carolina has a number of conveyances carrying chil dren to and from school, but Laurens county has only one. It has been the fortune of the Ronno school to show the Laurens county people that the school wagon can be and is being operated successfully. Renno is not a consolidated school, as many .think, but the moving of the school two miles from its former loca tion necessitated the introductibn of free transportation. The wagon and horse are cared for at the home of one of the trustees, whose son acts as driver. This does away with hiring a driver as is done by many schools. The wagon conveys thirteen children, which number completely tills it. Let us compare the average attend ance of each month last year with that of this year. First, let me say that thirty-three children were enrolled last year, thirty-i even this year. 1912-13 1913-14 September 27 32 October 27 33 November 10 31 December 27 :1 ..anuary 25 32 lebruary 25 30 Marcl 25 30 ''lhe average for this year' does not seem to have increasel much when we Compare the average with the enroll mient; but when we take from the roll four who came the first month and then stopped, one can readily perceive the improvement. Three of these four were large boys who stopped to go to work, the other was a child under school age. The attendance this year Ilas been the best known in yenrs.
