Hughes spent Monday afternoon in Clinton. Mr. C. E. Parker came down Satur day to spend several days here with Mrs. Parker. Messrs. W. C. Miss Margaret Wise returned to the city several days ago to take charge of the millinery department of Swit zer Company store. Miss Florence Jones, of Colleton county, arrived in the city several days ago to resume her duties as milliner for J. C. Burns & Company. Mr. Ford Franks will leave today for Columbus, Ga., and other south ern cities, where he will buy special iots of cotton for Cooper and Griflin. Miss Elizabeth Bra'ublo, of Balti more, has arrived in the city to have charge of the millinery department in the Minter Company store this sea son. Miss Annie Edmunds, who has had charge of the millinery department of Davis-Roper Company for several seasons, has arrived to take up her duties again this season. -Mr. vdward McCrady has returned to Laurens after spending several days in Sedalia, where he has been surveying a large tract of land be longing to Mr. J. " " * Letter To Laurens County * * Teachers. * To the Teachers: The History Bulletins from which the questions for the D. A. R. examin ation will be taken has been mailed to you--one for each pupil. This plan of concentrating time and energy is an experiment. As you know experi ments will not work unless accurately tried. I ask you to give this one a fair test and report results. South Carolina's history is as interesting as that of 'Massachusetts. It is a shame that our pupils know so little about it. The material is vei-y condensed the many charming stories had to be omitted. These you will have to read to the children or have them read. In teaching connect the history and geography. Have the pupils do a good deal of may drawing. See if you can't get the parents interested. The State Teachers' Association will meet in Spartanburg March 19th, 20th, 21st. A most attractive program has been arranged and it is predicted that the convention will be productive of 'much good. Don't fail to go and see if you can't bring something worth while back to your pupils. The educational issue of "The Ad vertiser" will 'be published soon. A apace is to be given to every school in the county. Please send in your ar ticle immeldiately. In preparing for the fair do not neglect your regular routine. We are anxious that the work for that day be representative of the work accom plished during the entire session. You are probably hearing from the various committees. Respond to their re quests if possible. It has been decid ed to give a prise to the school in each townsip which scores the highest number of points-all contests will be included in the grading. M[aking It Pilsin PEditor The Advertiser: Please allow me space in your paper, to correct or rather to explain, what might be misunderstood by some of your readers. I refer to an article headed "Lowndes J. Browning in Lau rens Monday", and apfearing in ladt week's Advertiser, in which the fol lowing language. is used, "he was not in favor of allowink North Carolinians, Georgian, and Bull Mooses to vote in South Carolina democratic primaries." The meaning I meant to convey, and I am sure the editor did not nean to misquote me, was just this, I was, and am, opposed to allowing jnen living in North Carolina, Georgia or any where else except in South Carolina, to vote in our primaries. I know this was the meaning you intended to convey, still some have misunderstood, and I ask you to give this the same publicity you did the former article. If the good people of these states will come here, and make this their home, we will gladly welcome them, and give them all the rights of citi zenship which we enjoy but I am op posed to citizens of other states nam ing our oflicials. Very respectfully, lowndes Birowning. Union, S. C., March 4, 1914. DESTROY CATTLE TICK Dipping Vat Has Proved to Be a Good Method-Other Methods Which Will Help. The arsenical solution in a concrete dipping vat has proved to be the most effective remedy for the extermi * nation of cat tle ticks. The follow ing are the specifi cations fo r th9 construe. * i tion of a dip ping vat: The site a e looted for the vat should be dry. The ex -. -:. cavation should be 7 feet deep, 27 feet long - - - at the top, 13 feet long at the bot tom, 4 feet wide at the top, 30 -. -Inches wide at the bot - - tom. The walls and floor should be 6 s ninches thick. The wooden r frames should be c .o nstructed of 2x4-inch braces, on the outside of which 1 f inch boards are tacked. * After the i~w* .. - concrete has set, take out -frame and - 'g plaster I n side of vat with a mixture of I part cement and 2 parts sand. The walla of the vat should be built one foot above the surface of the ground. The-, slide where the cattle go into the vat should oe three feet long with'a fall of two feet. The coner '. should be made as follows: Cement, 1 part; sand, 2% parts; gravel or broken rock, 5 parts, all thoroughly mixed. The dipping vat should be covered with a shed and provided with con venient pens, chute and dipping pen. The Arsenical Solution. The following formula is most com monly used: Sodium carbonate (Sal soda),' 24 lbs.; white arsenic, 8 lbs.; pine tar, 1 gallon; water, 500 gallons. Mix the soda and arsenic within a kettle containing 30 gallons of wa ter; h~o~l ii 30b minutes; let this sol'u tion cool to 140 degrees, then slowly add the pine tar., Other Methods of EradIcatIon.. In undertaking measures for eradi cating the tick it is evident that the pest may be attacked in two loca tions, namely, on the pasture and on the p3attle. In freeing pactures the method fol lowed may be either a direct or an indirect one. The former consists in excluding all cattle, horses and mules from pastures until all the ticks have died from starvation. The latter con Mists in permitting the cattle and other animals to continue on the in fested pasture and dipping them at regular intervals in the arsenical so lution and thus preventing, engorged females from dropping and reinfest .lng the pasture.
