The liegro Question.
Editor 'The Laurens Advertiser:
Please allow one space to say a few
-words in regard to the negro question
that has been talked about so much
here lately.
I 'believe that the time is not very
long off when the negro will have to
be put in a place by himself by force
of somie kind, if there is not some law
made that will give the poor--white
man a better chance than he has now.
You can take the majority of landown
ers and they had rather have a negro
to work for then than a white man,
for the reason that a negro will 'work
for less and steal a whole lot that they
don't work for ant if the man he is
Working for catches him stealing he
won't 'bother him because lie is work
ing for him Sand about half the negroes
are selling 'whiskey if not for them
selves, for some white man1 who he
knows will pay his fine if he gets
unght. I know this to be so for I
heard a negro say not more than a
week ago that his "Cap'n" told hIin to
go his route flid sell all the liquor
thait hie wanted, If lie got caught up1)
with he wonld pay his line. This tne
gro w:s selling whiskey then for I
saw im selling it. Some will ask
why I diin't report hium. Well that. Is
not iny bsliness. We have ollicers
for that job' and if they don't attend
to their duty and catch them I ai not
going to do it, for by so doing 1
woildn't make anything by it but one
inles.
I don't believe there's a white ,man
living that thinks a negro is his equal,
so why not put hiim to himself where
he can make his own laws and have

etely out of the High..nri
his own way in general. It wodll4 be
'better for the white man, both' rict and
poor,'if he Was'to'himself, for it ,ould
give the average poor ambitious white
man a chance to 'buy and pay for a
farm of his own and the man that
owns -more than his allotted share of
land could sell what he didn't need
and be in better circumstances than
he is now fooling with negro help, for
what -I can see rind l.earn about them
the most of them come out in debt.
Not only the negro comes out in delt
but also- the white man that has to
rent because he has to pay such a high
rent for his farm in competition with
negro renters.
You can take the labor around most
of the towns and cities and you will
find negroes holding some good job
that many a poor white man would
have if it wasn't for the negro. Of
course some of them is what is called
regular "nigger jobs", but if there
wasin't any negro to fill the pnlae it
wouldn't be any trouble to,get a white
man to fill it. So I say let everybod:
wpleome Chief Sam from Africa to S.
C., to get as mane shiploads as he can
to t-ike to the land of milk and honey,
never to return.
Yours truly,
. II. E. Madden.
