RELIEVE SUPERVISOR OF CLERICAL WORK County Commissioner Austin Aber erombie Suggests Change in Office of County Supervisor. Mr. Austin Abercrombie, of Youngs township, a member of the county road commission, was in the city on business Saturday and handed to a representative of The Advertiser a copy of a letter which he had address od to the county delegation in the leg islature, making suggestions intended to increase the efficiency in the office of the count supervisor. Mr. Aber crombie would have a clerk in the supervisor's office at least five days in the week to attend to the minor de tails which now take up so much time of the supervisor so that the super visor could give more time to the study and supervision of road work. Mr. Abercrombie also makes- the suggestion that the county commis sioners be given 'more power and bot ter pay, so that they too could accom plish more and be Justified in giving more attention to the roads. The letter of Mr. Abercrombie to the delegation is as follows: Laurens, S. C., Jan. 21, 1914. To the Honorable Delegation from Laurens County in the General As sombly of S'outh Carolina. Gentlemen: I would ask the privilege of making some suggestions on some needed leg islation as I see it, in my line of busi ness affecting your county. First: I think it would be to the hest interest of the county and to the people if the clerk in the supervisor's office were paid enough of salary, say an increase of $15 per month, making $40 per month, to justify him to stay there at least five days in the week, which would relieve the supervisor of staying there so close and enable him to be out on the road the greater portion of his time. The book keep ing and other matters pertaining to he business could be handled by the clerk, parties could leave messages for the supervisor with him, and the matter handled often through the malls. The people of our county are making great demand for the better ient of roads and no person can run ; business successfully without giving it at least one half his time. If the above were put into effect, the super visor could do this, look after other outside matters and be in his office on Saturdays, salesday and at meet ings of the board. The power and pay of came are .very un satisfactory at present.. I think the law ought to 'provide enough pay to enable each commissioner to spend a good portion of his time with the chain gang when in his section of the county and visit it occasionally all along during the year. As the law now stands, the county commissioners are elected by the people to do and ex pected to do something, when as a mat ter of fact, they have virtually no power vested in them to do anything, which makes it very unsatisfactory for the ofilcers and the people. I think the commissioners should be paid by the day for a certain number of days services actually rendered. It is from no personal motive that I make this suggestion, as I do ndt want the pay raised for me, but make it to start at the expiration of the terms of the present commissioners. My motive for 'making these sugges tions is purely for the interest of the county. The second -issue of the pamphlet "The .Infinitive and Participle in -ing," the very efficient work of Dr. Reed Smith of the department of IEng lis'h at the University, has. just come 'from -the press and is now 'ready for distribution. This will come as a bit of good news to all teachers in the State with whom the work is justly popular beoauso of its value to the teachers of South Oarolina. The manager of the baseball team has announced his tentative schedule. The University will play 23 college games, fifteen of which will be played at the university. The schedule em braces games with colleges from Penn sylvania, West Virginia, Virginia and North Carolina. Prospects for a good team are bright. Eustace Bradigy won the medal of fered annually by the Wade Hampton Chapter of the Daughters of the Con federacy to it student of the Universi ty who writes the best essay on some assigned subject in connection with the Confederacy. The manager of the University track team is trying to arrange for the university to compete in the big track meet which is to 'be 'held in Washing ton this spring. Many of the larger colleges of the 'astern and Middle Atlantic States will enter this meet. Several of the university students are employed in clerical position by the legislature. The mid-year examinations begin Monday, January 26 and will end the 31st. The second term will begin February 2. The number of students at the Uni versity whmo are working their way through college Is increasing each year. The services were conducted by Mr. Major, pastor of the First clhurch of Laurens, assisted by the Rev. F. W. Munnerlyn. Mrs. Moore was well known here, whore she spent so many years of her life prior to her removal to Laurens, where she resided at the time of her demise. -Mr. B. A. Sullivan of Laurens, paid a flying visit to relatives here lart week. Miss Wil Lou Gray the able school supervisor was in our midst last week. She lectured and showed views of her travels to a good crowd of pupils, and some others too, at the school house Wednesday evening. Miss Gray is "on to the job" and certainly f1ils the bill as supervisor. Misses Alleene Willis and Laurie Gray of Gray 'Court were the gues'.. Friday night of Mrs. I. S. Brooks and family.
