MISSIONERY CAMPAIGN
TO HOLD CONFERENCE
In Greenwood Sunday, February the
Second. Many Prominent Speakers.
Greenwood, Jan. 19.-The various
local committees in charge of the Con
ference to be held here February 1st
and 2nd, as part of the United Mis
sionary Campaign in the United States
and Canada are hard at Work now and
are getting everything in shape for
a most successful conference.
This Conference was arranged by
Prof. I. E. Gaines, a member of the
faculty of Richmond College, but now
on leave of absence for one year, hav
ing been granted this leave of absence
in order to devote his time to the
work of this campaign. The details
of the campaign are in the hands of
the Laymen's Missionary Movement
and Prof. Gaines has entire charge
of this work in the South.
A number of prominent speakers
will 'be in Greenwood for this meeting
names to be announced later as well
as the detailed program.
The Conference at Greenwood will
seek to enlist ministers and laymen
not only in .the town and county of
Greenwood, but also of the counties
of Abbeville and Laurens. Special in
vitations to these will be sent out by
the committee in charge of this part
of the work.
Following is a full and complete ex
planation of what this United Mission
ary Campaign is:
Foreword.
On March 19, 1913, at a meeting of
representatives of the Home Missions
Council of the United States and the
Conference of Foreign Missions Board
of North America, a decision was
reached to engage in a United Mis
sionary Campaign for the purpose of
introducing more adequate methods of
missionary education and finance in
the churches of North America, that
they may discharge their missionary
obligation at home and abroad.
The following features have been
approved by the Central Committee of
the United Missionary Campaign.
1. The campaign is in behalf of
missionary work both at home and
abroad, and aims at the enlistment of
the entire membership of all the con
mu-nions as intelligent and regular
supporters of missions. One feature
of the campaign is to be a nation-wide
simultaneous, every-member canvass
for home and foreign missions and all
regular benevolences in March, 1914,
on the part of as many congregations
as can be led to undertake it at that
time (unless a communion decides up
on some other period).
2. To prepare the congregations of
the country for such a canvass as
many missionary conferences as pos
sible between September 15, 1913, and
February 15, 1914, will be held. The
conferences will begin with an even
ing session and continue through the
following (lay. Local committees will
have large responsibilities in prepar
ing for these conferences. The Ex
ecutive Committee of the Layman's
Missionary M1ovement has been re
qluested to organize and dlirect these
interdenominationai conferences and
has consented to do so.
3. The campaign aims not only at
securing larger .missionary offering,
but at the development of the latent
spiritual resources of Christian pee
iple. Prayer, personal Bible study,I
personal service and stewardship will
all be emphasized in their relatIon to
Christian efficiency.
4. Deputation work by volunteer
speakers will be undertaken as widely
as possible to bring the inspiration
and message of this united campaign
to every community and every congre
gation.
5. The observance of Sunday, Feb
ruary 15, as Missionary D)ay with ex
change of pulpits wvherever practica
ble, and with special missionary fea
tures in all the services of that day,
in preparatlon for the simultaneous
canvass for missions and benevolences
in March.
6. The widest possible use of care
fully selected and specially prepared
missionary literature. In response to
thme invitation of the Central Commit
tee, the Missionary Education Move
ment is giving special attention to
this feature of the campaign.
L -Still larger and more general as
sistance of the public -press in secur
ing religious and missionary news,
and in interpreting the spirit of Chris
tianity as the spirit of individual and
universal service and helpfulness.
