ASSOCIATE JUSTICE
Legisin'ture Plunges Into Elections
and Wastes Little 'Timie in Reach.
lug IDeelsieu.
Columbia, Jan, 15.--The General
Assembly today plunged right into the
elections that were scheduled and
:made some headway. As was suggest
ed in The News and Courier several
days ago, the lead that Judge George
W. Gage had at that time was main
taied, ald he was elected to the 1)os
tion of Associate Justice to fill the
position vacated by .1udge C. A. Woods,
who has taken his place on the 1'ed.
eral bench. .fudge Gage was e:ected
oil the second ballot. Of course, the
election of Judge Gage to the Snprene
Court left Vacant the position that lie
hadl so worthily filled. There were
four namies presented for this honor,
.\lessrs Ernest \loore; of Lancaster:
G. W. S. Iart, of Yorkville; G. W.
llagsdale, of Winn;sboro, and. Solicitor
.. K. Henry, of Chester. The judi
cial mantle fell on Mr. Ernest Moore,
who was elected oil the first ballot,
reeiving the exact number of votes
necessary for his election. In the oth
er elections for Circuit .1udgships the
incumbent judges were all re-elected
without opposition. 'These atonors fall
ing to:
First circuit, I. U. liowman, of Or
angeburg; 2d circuit, It. 1P. Rice, of
Aiken; 3d circuit, John S. Wilson, of
Manning; 4th circuit, iThos 11. Spain,
of Darlington; 8th circuit, Frank B.
Gary, of Abbeville.
The re-election of Judge Eugene I.
Gary, as 'C'hief .Justice of the Supreme
Court was purely a matter of form,
as there was no opposition to him, the
precedent always being in favor of
the re-election of the Chief .1ustice
where he renders faithful and efficient
service.
flatters From Senate End.
The I lonse prior to entering into
the elections, spent forty-five minutes
in disposing of matters that came from
the Senate side, in the reception of
Niew ihills and references od these
and the hearing of the special message
from the governor with reference to
the expenditure of certain funds that
are appropriated to the governor in
connection with the better enforce
ment of the law, requisitions, etc., and
the ec'onolies lie had practiced.
Yesterday the ilouse took up for a
fev monents Mr. 1laskin's bill which
sought to repeal tlie Act requiring raili
roads selling mileage books to receive
the (oipsllS on ite trains. Today,
after :1 short spell, the bill died, the
encting words being stricken out on
an aye :: n l nay vote. The idea of the
1louse seemed to be that it did not
wi>Ih the railroads even remotely to
Ifor(1 legislation upon this matter.

IN MEMORIAM
Whereas, the Great and Supreme
Ruler of the universe has in Ills inll
nite wisdom removed from among us
one of our esteemed fellow laborers,
liro. .1. H. BIritt, and whereas the inti
mate relation held with him in the
faithfnil discharge of his duties In this
lodge makes It eminently befitting that
we record our appreciation of him,
therefore, be Is resolved;
First, That Princeton Lodge No. 129,
A. F. A1., has sustained an irreparable
loss
Second, That the wisdom and ability
which he has exercised in the aid of
our organization by service, contribu
tion and counsel will be held in grate
ful r'emembrauce.
Third, that the removal of such a
life from our midst leaves vacancy and
shadow that will be deeply realized by
all the members and friends of this
lodge and will prove a serious loss to
the conmunity and the public.
Fourth," that with deep sympathy
with the bereaved relatives of the de
ceased we express our hope that even
so great a loss to us all may be over
ruled for good by Him who doeth all
things well.
Fifth, that a copy of these resolu
tions be spread upon 'the records of
the lodge, a copy prInted in the local
papers and a copy suitably engrossed,
forwarded the bereaved family.
