C., Jan. 8.-The opening of the new year social season was made particularly memorable Thurs day evening, Jan. 1., to a number of friends when Mrs. W. C. Whitmire en tertained at one of the must interest ing parties of the season. The cor dial hospitality of this home is always a distinct pleasure to scores of friends. All the apartments were thrown in to one. Christmas greens with holly and mistletoe made a lovely framing for the pretty picture. After the guests had arrived part ners were found for a flower contest by drawing corresponding numbers which were mounted on dainty little hand-painted cards. The couple hav ing the greatest number of correct an swers was given a delicious box of candy. Tables were then arranged for cards and after many interesting games, a dainty salad course was served. Later in the evening the guests gathered around a daintily ap pointed table from which lunch was dispensed by Miss Lillie Willis. Those invited were Misses Lillie Willis of Gray Court, Marie Yar brough, Ruth Justus, Bessie Moore, 01 lie and Trula Goebel, Mozelle Huff, Netta and Jennie Engels, Eva and Fay Hill, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Patton, Mr. and Mrs. J. 13. Wright, Mr. and Mrs. F. Engels, Mr. and Mrs. W. C. 'Moore, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Lamb, Mr. and Mrs. L. L. Ligon, Mesdames Alver son and Wilburn, Messrs. J. Y. Martin was called to his reward. lie had been in declining health for quite a while but had been confined to his bed only a few weeks. If he had lived till February 15th, he would have been SO years of age. le was a devoted husband, a kind and loving father. He has been a member of the Baptist church for a number of years. On Sunday his remains were follow ed by a large crowd of relatives and friends to New Prospect church, where the funeral services were conducted by Rev, G. C. IHedgepeth, after which he was laid to rest in the cemetery to await the resurrection morn. The pall bearers were Lynwood Martin, B. Martin, W. 0. Jones, Clyde Childers, George Stewvart, D~ock Childress. Mr. Martin wvas reared in Laurens county. Fifty six years ago he was married to Miss Elliott Moore. She together with six childr'en are left to mourn his de parture. The children are as followvs: Mrs. Minnie Hughes, of Watts 'Mill, G. Whit Martin, J1. A. Martin, near~ Watts Mill. Mrs. Lena Owings, near W~arrxior Creek, Mrs. Paul Glenn and E. L. Martin, of Greenville. The faimily have the deepest sym pathy of their many friends in their 'hereavement. Rev. B. P. Mitchell conducted ser vices on Sunday morning at Lucas Avenue Baptist church and will hold a series of meetings at this place. Ev erybody is cordlially invited to attend. We are quite sure that Bro. 'Mitchell wvilI not fail to tell us something good. Rev. J. A. Marler has been called as pastor to Mill's Mill and will move there and take charge of the work at an early date. 'Rev, and Mrs. G. C. Hedgepeth have returned home after spending the hiol idays with their parents. ~Mrs. Emie McPherson and children, of Clinton, have been a few days with Mr. and Mi's. W. E. Burns. Mr. W. C. Arnold spent Thursday in lonea Path. Mr. William Arnold has returned home after a visit to his brother, J. O. Arnold in Pelzer. Miss Fannie Hughes of Greenville, is visiting her friend, Miss Leona Raines. Miss Rosa Traynham of Greenville spent last week-end with relatives here. Prof. J. W. Huff and Miss Sara Britt wurn visitors in Laurens Saturday. \irs. .1. J. Ridgeway of Torrey '::reek is visiting relatives here. Alr. aind Mrs. J. F. Davenport spent Thursday in -lonca Path. Mr. Tom Burgess is at Mr. J. 11. Cunningham's place. Mr. ('uningham has moved to his home in the city. Mr. E dd Taylor has imoved his family to Mr. J. B. Deshields' place. Mir. Joe Williams has moved his family here to the farm recently purchased from J. E. Johnson. Capt. J. W. Lanford is in Tennessee buying stock for this market and will arrive soon with hogs, mules and horses. Mr. M. B. Moore and wife of Wash ington, D. C. are visiting Mr. Moore's father, Mr. E. 11. Moore. Messrs Richard Moore and Oscar Thomas are at home from the army, their time having expired. Little Miss Catharine Wolff was se verely though not seriously burned last week. She is doing nicely. Mrs. Mattie Lanford is improving slowly. Mr. Arch Holmes is on the sick list. Mir. L4. M. Cannon has been confined to his room for the -past week suffer ing with lagrip~pe. Mr's.
